Job Summary:

The Research Agronomist, in collaboration with the Breeding Team, works to design and implement a camelina research trial program to develop commercial camelina varieties and best agronomic practices. This position is part of a team of professional research agronomists.  The Research Agronomist assists with the planning and execution of a field breeding program, including off-site yield trials and nurseries, for breeding and agronomic protocols to improve camelina yields. The Research Agronomist is also responsible for assisting with yield trial data review and resource organization.

Essential Functions:
  • Manage field research trials including land selection and contracting, site development, as well as all aspects of agronomic trial management, including seeding, spraying, maintenance and harvest
  • Translate research agronomy trials into improved best management practices, providing greater returns for growers
  • Support the sales group as needed by troubleshooting commercial fields when needed
  • Participate in grower meetings from time to time to provide educational presentations and research results
  • Initiate and execute successful field trial and nursery program to support breeding plans, in collaboration with breeding team
  • Participate in trial design, location selection, process improvement, and ongoing quality improvement
  • Communicate performance knowledge of product line-up to Production Teams
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience in a plant breeding program including small or field-scale plots and nursery research methods required
  • Demonstrated knowledge in crop production and seed production required
  • Demonstrated experience leading seasonal employees preferred
  • Knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Education and Experience:
  • BSc in Agriculture or related degree in Biological Sciences required
  • 3 years of experience in a plant breeding program including small or field-scale plots and nursery research methods
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research equipment use, repair and maintenance
  • Ability to attain CDL within 3 months of hire
  • Ability to attain commercial applicators license within 3 months of hire
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
  • Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
  • Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
  • Travel up to 25% overnight and extensive day travel
