This is an exciting contract opportunity based in Sunbury, where you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and integrity of our offshore wind portfolio throughout its lifecycle.
As a Geohazard Specialist, you will leverage your expertise to identify, assess, and mitigate geohazards and obstructions across our wind farm sites, cable routes, landfalls, and onshore facilities. You will be involved from the initial bid assessment through design, construction, and operation, contributing to fit-for-purpose ground models and ground engineering solutions.

As a Geohazard Specialist, you will leverage your expertise to identify, assess, and mitigate geohazards and obstructions across our wind farm sites, cable routes, landfalls, and onshore facilities. You will be involved from the initial bid assessment through design, construction, and operation, contributing to fit-for-purpose ground models and ground engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide specialist geohazards expertise across bp’s offshore wind portfolio throughout the project lifecycle.
- Scope and provide technical oversight for geohazard surveys and consultancy execution.
- Develop ground models and implement geohazard management strategies for both permanent and temporary works.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate geohazards (seismicity, shallow gas, slope instability, etc.) and obstructions (challenging seafloor conditions, debris, boulders, UXO, etc.) at relevant depths for cables and foundations.
- Collaborate within an integrated geoscience team to build comprehensive ground models for wind farm engineering projects.
- Quantify and clearly present ground engineering risks to stakeholders, ensuring understanding, control, and continuous risk reduction.
- Work closely with safety, consent, and procurement teams to ensure the robust execution of all works.
- Collaborate effectively with foundation, transmission engineering, and construction disciplines to safely deliver site investigations and project infrastructure.
- Ensure safe and cost-efficient design and integrity management in accordance with bp and industry technical practices and standards throughout the asset lifecycle.
- Maintain strong relationships with third-party suppliers, contractors, and other key partners.
- Actively contribute to technology development and engage with the wider geohazards and geophysics communities of practice to share knowledge and findings.
Mandatory Requirements:
- A degree in Geoscience or Geo-Engineering.
- Approximately 10 years or more of relevant industry experience.
- Appropriate professional accreditation.
- Excellent knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards.
- Proven project management expertise in site investigation and ground engineering activities.
- Extensive expertise in planning and implementing site investigations, characterization, and coordinated ground model development.
- Significant expertise in geophysical survey of the seafloor and seabed (including data acquisition, processing, and interpretation) over the required depths.
- Demonstrable expertise in the assimilation and integration of geophysical data with geological and geotechnical information (probes, logs, tests) to develop comprehensive ground models.
- Extensive expertise in the identification, assessment, and management of geohazard and ground risks.
- Solid knowledge of Offshore Wind ground engineering activities related to the design, analysis, and installation of offshore wind infrastructure (e.g., turbine and substation foundations, and associated transmission systems – both off- and onshore).
- Excellent proficiency in both written and verbal English, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage time effectively and work collaboratively with distributed teams across different time zones.
- Proven expertise in working within multi-disciplinary teams and on major projects with minimal technical supervision.
- Strong and proven stakeholder management and collaboration skills, with comfort in reporting to senior management.
Desirable Skills:
- A Masters or PhD in a relevant discipline.
- Membership of relevant industry panels or standards organizations (e.g., SUT, OGP, ISO etc.).
- Fundamental understanding of soil and rock (geo)physics.
- Experience using geohazard software (e.g., IHS Kingdom, Petrel).
- Experience with i) advanced cone penetration test interpretation and ii) down-hole geophysical logging interpretation.
- Awareness of
ii) structural aspects of foundation design,
iii) transmission-system design, and
iv) Energy Yield and metocean assessment. Coding/scripting expertise (e.g., Matlab, Python).
- Experience working remotely.
- Experience in coaching and mentoring more junior team members.
