Role Overview
This position involves providing technical leadership and delivery within substation engineering projects, particularly focused on protection & control (P&C) systems. Responsibilities include developing technical solutions, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and mentoring junior engineers. The role also supports the enhancement of P&C capabilities within the wider engineering function.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Lead the development of technical solutions for substation P&C systems, both independently and in team settings.
Act as Lead Project Engineer for substation projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV, with a focus on 132kV and above.
Prepare comprehensive P&C design packages aligned with applicable industry and client standards.
Design & Engineering Delivery
Perform power system studies (e.g., fault level, load flow) to define protection settings.
Produce relay protection settings and supporting files, as well as equipment specifications.
Contribute to early-stage consultancy deliverables, including technical reports and presentations.
Ensure compliance with design regulations, including applicable health and safety legislation.
Quality & Assurance
Conduct technical reviews and provide approval/sign-off of design deliverables.
Maintain alignment with internal and client engineering management standards.
Promote and implement a Safety by Design approach across all project stages.
Collaboration & Mentorship
Coordinate effectively with internal teams, including structural and civil engineering functions.
Provide mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced team members, especially in the P&C area.
Business Development & Strategy
Support bid preparation, client meetings, and technical sections of proposals.
Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders.
Assist with team development initiatives, including recruitment and skills identification.
Process Improvement & Innovation
Participate in developing tools, templates, and processes to improve delivery efficiency.
Help shape internal policies, objectives, and strategic goals.
Stay active in professional and industry forums, maintaining continuing professional development (CPD).
Requirements
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) with 3+ years' experience; or
Master's degree with 2+ years' experience; consultancy background preferred.
Technical Knowledge
Deep understanding of substation design, protection principles, and electrical engineering practices.
Familiarity with UK HSE legislation, CDM Regulations, and environmental requirements.
Awareness of industry-standard procedures and specifications from national transmission operators.
Understanding of BIM standards (e.g., PAS 1192, ISO 19650) and CAD applications in substation design.
Knowledge of temporary works procedures and impressed voltage effects.
