SSEN Transmission is at the heart of the just transition to net zero in the UK. In the coming years, our network will be pivotal in connecting and transporting the power needed to decarbonise the UK's electricity network and in doing so power the UK's net zero ambition. Our business is rapidly growing, to deliver the largest investment package that Scotland's electricity system has ever seen, with a projected investment programme of over £20bn in the next 10 years.
As Lead Manager, Energy Technology Models and Markets, you are the subject matter expert on energy technologies and their market drivers within energy sector developments. With the development of new energy technologies and innovative market arrangements, it is critical to ensure that network capability requirements are robustly informed by credible system operating conditions.You will create and maintain energy technology models and a database of dynamic import and export energy profiles for all major technologies and consumer groups. Your work will contribute to developing future energy scenarios and credible future electricity system operation backgrounds aligned with government policy ambitions and targets.
This role will report to our Senior Manager, Energy Futures sitting in the Business Planning and Commercial directorate.
The responsibilities of the Lead Manager, Energy Technology Models and Markets include:
- Maintain a strong understanding of energy technology landscape and best practice, including applicable technical policy and peer activity, and how this might impact on SSEN Transmission.
- Gather data and evidence to understand energy users' behaviours and market conditions that impact upon supply and demand.
- Build and maintain a database of energy generation, storage and users' archetypes that comprise dynamic energy profiles of import and export for all major technologies and consumer groups.
- Maintain, in consultation with internal and external stakeholders, a close awareness and understanding of any business, industry, technology or national factors that would impact upon SSEN Transmission's system plans, and make recommendations for change accordingly.
- Undertake stakeholder engagement on the current and future energy technology model representation, including with consumers, generators, disruptive technology providers, statutory authorities, regulators, supply chain, academics etc.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Good working knowledge of GB energy industry structure including markets, economics of transmission investment and networks regulatory framework. A thorough understanding of energy technologies and their representation in energy system models and the power system.
- Systematic, disciplined and analytical approach. Ability to lead end-to-end research projects. Ability to lead and manage cross functional project teams in a matrix environment, covering multiple challenges and objectives. Ability to operate outside field of expertise, in particular engaging with technical, financial and engineering specialists, to gather relevant information.
- Strong communication and influencing skills. Ability to clearly articulate and present strategic and technical content to Board level.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and direct a strong, technical team, with many objectives over varying timescales, and manage key stakeholders. Ability to coach and develop other team members, of direct and indirect reporting lines.
- Minimum Degree qualified in a numerate / engineering discipline.
