Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Senior Power Systems Research Engineer to work in our Power and Energy Systems Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology (EES&T) Directorate at Idaho National Laboratory. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Energy Systems Laboratory in Idaho Falls with every other Friday off. Hybrid work opportunities may be available for this position.
You will report to the Manager of Power and Energy Systems department and you will contribute to research projects, enhance technical capability of the group, and interface with internal and external partners. You will also contribute to the team's culture, which is characterized by strong trust, mutual respect, and support.

Responsibilities Include:
- Select, apply, and integrate engineering principles, theories, concepts, and technologies with complex engineered systems.
- Alone or in collaboration with others, design, plan, coordinate, implement, and disseminate projects in the form of technical reports, publications, and presentations at national technical meetings and project reviews with program sponsors.
- Determine or approve the technical approach for the development and testing of engineered solutions using existing or newly created technologies.
- Produce proposals and perform business development for new work including joint projects with industry. Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design.
- Collaborate and partner with other government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project goals.
- Enhance technical skills and other capabilities to support the INL mission. Stay up to date with developments in industry and maintain skills and contribute to the development of new concepts.
- Develop design documentation, maintenance and configuration of power systems, and research and development of advanced power control or measurement techniques.
- Apply engineering principles to the development of operational power systems and may include the development of software and hardware.
- Research and development activities, developing power system dynamic and transient modeling and simulations, including machine learning applications that advance power system protection.
- Test and validate developed power system theories and algorithms using digital real-time simulation environments including hardware-in-the-loop.
- Mentor junior staff and look for opportunities to involve them in current projects.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree and 6 years of experience or a PhD and 4 years of experience. Relevant degrees include: Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field.
- Established publication or a patent record in power systems dynamic and transient modeling and simulation, power systems applications, protection, and stability analysis.
- Proposal writing and research project execution experience.

- The pay range for this position is $109,260 - $223,908 . At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
