ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Associate Gas Engineer provides general engineering support for all areas of Vermont Gas (VGS) Operations Department. They are responsible for the preliminary design of gas facilities including performing cost studies. They create and manage permanent documents such as asbuilt drawings for all the Company's gas facilities. They are responsible for updating gas system network analysis software models and make recommendations for system changes and improvements.

WHAT ARE THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION?
  • Design and/or review of natural gas distribution facilities including preparation of capital cost estimates. Work closely with Sales and Marketing Department and Construction Manager to design new projects.
  • Update and maintain gas distribution and transmission network analysis models to reflect construction and maintenance activities using Synergi system modeling software. Create new network analysis models of VGS gas systems. Use the software to evaluate new pipeline projects, new gas usage demands, and improvements to the gas system.
  • Maintain and update VGS distribution and transmission as-built drawings to reflect construction and maintenance activities. Duties may include inspection and as-built surveys of system expansion projects and gate stations as needed. Develop new drawings when required.
  • Assist the GIS Team with the development and maintenance of the GIS pipeline mapping database. Assist with continual improvements to the database, along with field data collection.
  • Assist with updates to VGS Operations manuals including writing procedures and reviewing existing procedures for compliance with Department of Transportation and State of Vermont regulations.
  • Assist with planning and permitting for smaller maintenance activities on the transmission and distribution systems.
  • Act as project manager for gate station builds/rebuilds and smaller transmission projects.
  • Assist with the analysis of construction costs, which includes generating average costs for installation of distribution main and services and detailed project cost analyses.
  • Act as back up for the other Engineers. Assist with Integrity Management Program (transmission and distribution) activities as needed. Other duties as may be requested or required.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE?
  • Understanding of basic gas engineering principles. Proficient in Microsoft Office Products and CAD software.
  • Technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with various internal and external customers. Ability to supervise contractor construction crews.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize various tasks with some assistance.

These skills are normally acquired with a bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or related field, and 1-3 years of experience in Engineering.

This position offers growth potential and support to become a Professional Engineer.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK CONDITIONS
  • Position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199.
  • During the summer months will continuously walk/stand. During the winter months will continuously sit. Frequently works on computer.
  • Frequently required to drive, use both hands for simple grasping, and work outdoors with occasional exposure to weather conditions.
  • Occasionally lift between 10-50 lbs.; push; pull; bend; stoop; and squat.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, etc.; walking on uneven ground and subject to hazards.
  • Must be willing to travel occasionally.
