Wood is currently recruiting a Lead Instrumentation and Control Engineer to join its team in Abu Dhabi.

Due to the nature of the projects and client expectation, the position will be based full time at our office in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The successful candidate will Lead a team of Onshore Instrumentation and Control Engineers and Designers for large-scale Oil and Gas Projects. The candidate should be flexible in assignments, and eager to learn. Willing to have the patience to face work pressure & changes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design and Development:
  • Develop Instrumentation & Control designs from the Conceptual Stage through the Detailed Design Stage, providing sustainable and efficient solutions.
  • Lead the design, modification, and analysis of instrumentation and control systems for large Oil and Gas Projects, including existing plant debottlenecking (Brownfield) and new greenfield installations.
  • Develop control strategies for implementation in Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Fire and Gas Systems (F&G). Prepare specifications for the procurement of instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Identify and review new technology developments and selection of techno-economical field and control systems that could provide more cost-effective facilities.
  • Assist in the preparation, review, and approval of project documents for the Instrumentation Discipline, including:
  • Instrumentation Design Basis and philosophy documents
  • Specifications for Instrumentation and Instrumented Control and Safety Systems (DCS/ESD/F&G).
  • Specifications for Machine Monitoring Systems, Integrated Turbine Control Systems, Anti-Surge Controls, Load Sharing & Performance Controls for Compressors, Steam Turbine Controls and Package Control Systems (BMS, Flare Control Panel, etc).
  • Experience in OT Cybersecurity for Instrumented Control and Safety Systems and Package Control Systems.
  • Calculations for SIS loops, orifice sizing, control valve sizing, thermowell wake frequency, etc.
  • Design specifications and datasheets for various field instruments, control valves and on-off valves, DCS/ESD systems, F&G systems, liquid and gas analyzers, gas chromatographs, condition monitoring systems, etc.
  • Functional Design Specifications, Instrumentation Drawings such as Control System Architectures, DCS functional logic, PLC logic, hook-up drawings, loop drawings, wiring diagrams, interface drawings, cable block diagrams, cable schedules, panel layout drawings, cable routing drawings, cable tray/duct layouts, instrument layouts, instrument installation details, junction box wiring, instrument interconnection drawings, etc.
  • LLI items/MTOs/Project cost estimates for Instrumentation LLI's and Control Systems
  • Performance of bid evaluation and vendor document review and approval for Control Systems, Field Instruments, Control Valves, on-off valves, DCS/ESD systems, F&G systems, liquid and gas analyzers, gas chromatographs,etc.
  • FAT and SAT procedures and attendance at the testing of control systems during FAT and SAT
  • Review and design of OEM adequacy studies and reports for existing Control Systems, Control Valves and Field instruments.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., API, ISA, ANSI, AGA, ISO, IEC, and client specifications).
  • Evaluate supplier/subcontractor technical bids for compliance with internal and client specifications and scopes of work.
  • Review vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for adequacy of I&C design input requirements.
  • Optimize design solutions to meet budget constraints without compromising quality and safety.
  • Prepare and review I&C materials technical reports, method statements, vendor technical clarifications, and technical bid evaluation reports.


Leadership Skill:
  • Lead and mentor a team of Instrumentation & Control engineers and designers, serving as the primary point of contact for I&C engineering matters.
  • Identify technical issues, define alternative solutions, establish pros and cons for multiple solutions, and make recommendations through official project documents such as technical queries and technical deviations.
  • Allocate tasks, provide guidance, and issue clear directions to ensure effective and efficient project execution.
  • Develop project schedules, ensure adherence to timelines and budgets, and monitor project schedules on submissions of I&C deliverables.
  • Coordinate with project/Engineering managers, procurement, construction, and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated design solutions.
  • Ensure all deliverables' accuracy and completeness and that they comply with quality standards/specifications,
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, initiative, and analytical skills.
  • Lead, motivate, coach, and manage a team independently, ensuring engineering competence, team building and enhancing responsibility and ownership.
  • Demonstrate highly effective technical and practical engineering skills in the Instrumentation & Control discipline, consistently delivering quality, accurate, and timely work to WOOD and its clients.
  • Identifying Project milestones, delivering deliverables as per project schedule within budgeted manhours.

Stakeholder Management:
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure clear communication and understanding of project requirements.
  • Manage interface meetings with Clients and Vendors to progress design scopes

Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure all Instrumentation and Control activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Promote a culture of safety within the engineering team and across the project site.
  • Should actively participate in various project workshops/reviews such as Design/P&ID/HAZID/HAZOP/SIL/ALARP Reviews, 3D Model Reviews, Constructability and SIMOPS reviews

Qualifications and skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Instrumentation Engineering as a minimum
  • At least 20 years of experience in Oil & Gas projects Design from Conceptual stage to Detailed Design Stage.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in Lead Engineer position for a Major Greenfield/Brownfield Project FEED/Detailed Design.
  • Proven experience in selecting instrumentation and control equipment, developing control strategies, and preparing specifications.
  • Preferred candidates have expertise in control system design, including control loop design, field instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, actuators), and communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus).
  • Experience in managing a team of 50+ engineers and Designers
  • Experience in coordination of the satellite office teams and managing the productivity and quality
  • Hands-on experience in industry software, such as In tools, Conval, SPI, 3D Model Review Tools (SPR & Navis Works), MS Office Suite, etc.
  • Must be self-motivated, results-oriented, multi-tasking and be flexible to work well under tight schedules in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Able to communicate in English both verbally and in writing with other disciplines & multinational work forces in an effective manner
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods, inter-discipline coordination.
  • Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
