We are seeking a Lead R&D Engineer/Scientist to lead the research, testing, and evaluation of refrigerant flammabilityproperties to ensure compliance with industry safety standards and regulations.The engineer will work on the development and assessment oflow-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants, conduct flammability test, andeffectively communicate technical information to industry and customers toassist their transition to new environmentally safer refrigerant substitutes.

This job will facilitatedesign, development, and testing to meet project objectives faster and moreefficiently and you develop and commercialize products & technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct experiments to assess refrigerant flammability characteristics, including lower flammability limits (LFL), upper flammability limits (UFL), minimum ignition energy (MIE), and burning velocity.
  • Develop and validate test methods for evaluating ignition sources, flame propagation, and autoignition temperatures.
  • Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or other modeling techniques for flammability risk assessment.
  • Ensure compliance with industry safety regulations and standards, such as ASHRAE 34, ISO 817 requirements.
  • Collaborate with regulatory bodies, certification agencies, and industry groups to stay updated on evolving flammability classifications and safety guidelines.
  • Assist in developing new refrigerants.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

The annual base salaryrange for this position is $137,000- $167,000. Please note that this salaryinformation serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factorswhen extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope andresponsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, educationand training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.

In October, 2024 Honeywell announced the spin-off of our Advanced Materials business to become a stand-alone publicly traded company, independent of Honeywell. Our intention is that this role, dedicated to the Advanced Materials business, will be a part of this future transaction when the separation occurs.

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related field OR
  • 8+ years of experience in refrigerant flammability testing, fire safety, or related areas in HVAC&R, chemical, or automotive industries.

  • Knowledge of flammability testing methods, fire dynamics, and heat transfer principles.
  • Understanding of refrigerant thermodynamics, properties.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to different stakeholders.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Experience working with refrigerants
  • Knowledge of UL, ASHRAE, and ISO flammability classification methods.
  • Hands-on experience in setting up and operating flammability test rigs.
