This role requires effective collaboration and communication across Subsurface and Wells teams.

Key Accountabilities:

Well Planning:

  • Support well planning activities and the creation of relevant NWD documents in line with BP’s Wells Common Process and Safety and Operational Risk standards.
  • Collaborate with Renewal/Depletion Geoscientists to ensure well planning activities and documents meet target objectives and desired outcomes.
  • Assist in the preparation of key documents, participate in meetings, and support decision-making processes (e.g., Well Concept Document, No Drilling Surprises meeting, well option selection, operational decision trees, and data acquisition program finalization).
  • Help create pre-drill risk registers and ensure mitigation and contingency plans are in place for all geological risks.
  • Support the construction of the SOR document, ensuring it includes well objectives, data acquisition, and relevant overburden characterization elements.
  • Ensure appropriate resourcing of well-site geologists (both onshore and offshore) through active engagement with suppliers.
  • Foster integration of well planning and operational activities through strong collaboration with key stakeholders, NWD, and Wells leadership.
  • Assist in the preparation of the GOP, ensuring all relevant information is included.
Geological Operations:

  • Participate in daily NWD/subsurface operations meetings.
  • Contribute relevant interpretations during morning Wells rig calls as needed.
  • Participate in subsurface hole section previews and reviews.
  • Engage in LWOP and CWOP exercises.
  • Provide support to the Operations Geologist, including daily ops calls and providing up-to-date information and offset data.
  • Help interpret and select formation tops, casing, and core points per SOR and decision trees.
  • Ensure efficient delivery of the data acquisition program, maintain data quality, and secure all sensitive subsurface data and well results.
Post Well:

  • Support the completion of the EOW Report, ensuring it meets the New Wells Common Process expectations.
  • Finalize and electronically capture all data in the corporate regional data store, and distribute hard copies to stakeholders.
  • Document and share all post-well key learnings in PWR and appropriate NWD venues.
  • Support root cause analysis for any NPT event related to subsurface operations (Orange category) and distribute learnings through appropriate channels.
Experience and Job Requirements:

  • University Degree in Geology or a related subject.
  • 8 to 15 years of relevant industry experience, primarily in a geological well planning environment. General knowledge of Operations Geology is an asset but not required.
  • Essential experience in well planning and geological interpretation.
  • Proficiency in geological, seismic, and petrophysical log interpretation and workstation skills; experience with Petrel and TechLog is highly desirable.
  • Experience with deep water Gulf of Mexico exploration and development wells is highly desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
