Position Statement The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking to hire a Nuclear Safety Equipment Technician in the Agency's Nuclear Calibration Laboratory. This position performs complex professional work requiring the application of scientific principles to radiation instrument calibration, instrument repair, and implementation of laboratory quality assurance procedures. Essential Functions

  • Conducts daily calibration laboratory work to meet customer needs.
  • Conducts radiation measuring instrument calibrations utilizing high and medium energy gamma and beta emitting nuclear materials.
  • Reviews manufacturer literature regarding instrument operation, design, calibration, and repair
  • Assists in the performance of quality control procedures for all laboratory equipment and standards necessary to retain traceability to national standards.
  • Appropriately handles licensed radioactive materials in accordance with state regulations responsible for proper use, accountability, security, and training.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor and peers regarding laboratory radiation measurement operations, error resolution, and instrument specific calibration techniques.
  • Assists the Office of Nuclear Safety (ONS) Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) program.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of: (a) a Bachelor's degree with major course work in biology, chemistry, physics, electronics, health physics, or equivalent fields and no previous experience; or (b) an Associate degree in biology, chemistry, physics, electronics, health physics, or equivalent fields accompanied by two (2) years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal education with emphasis on electronics and technology.
  • Experience with performing instrument diagnosis and the use of measuring and test equipment (M&TE).
  • Experience with oral and written reports; effective communication with internal stakeholders.
  • Experience with team collaboration; work efforts guided by technical procedures and industry best practices.
  • Experience with laboratory performance and quality control concepts.
  • Experienced in coordinating inventory of supplies, basic procurement, and workspace organization.
  • Working knowledge and concepts governing safe handling of radioactive material.
  • Working knowledge and concepts of ionizing radiation, radioactivity, and radiation protection.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour 'on call' capacity.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. This job may require a good deal of walking or standing or involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • Requires a criminal history check through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
