Job Title: Principal Engineer - Mechanical (Power & Water Facilities)
We are assisting a key player in the energy sector in their search for a Principal Engineer to contribute to the strategic goals of maximising uptime for Power & Water plants. The role will involve reviewing and analysing facility performance, ensuring efficient service, and identifying opportunities for improvement. The successful candidate will also support senior management and JV board members in executing improvement plans.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and verify the actual performance of existing facilities to ensure design targets and operating philosophies are being achieved. Proactively communicate gaps and propose improvement activities.
- Provide technical input on performance metrics such as reliability, operability, availability, and maintainability to ensure proposed designs for new plants are practical and future-proof.
- Identify areas for cost reduction and propose alternative engineering solutions. Conduct techno-economic evaluations of improvement proposals.
- Support commercial and legal teams during negotiations of commercial agreements.
- Analyse Work Plan and Budget (WPB) financial submissions against priorities, providing insights into alignment and proposing actions to improve it.
- Verify Green House Gas (GHG) submissions to ensure compliance with GHG procedures and timely verification.
- Mentor and train Qatari engineers to ensure knowledge transfer and support career development as part of the Qatarization plan.
- Conduct due diligence on proposed asset improvements, ensuring proposals are technically sound and suitable for economic evaluations by the commercial team.
- Lead benchmarking activities and prepare improvement plans to achieve 1st quartile performance on capacity, reliability, cost, shutdown duration, and other relevant parameters.
- Review operational and financial performance of assets and develop internal management reports for senior leadership.
- Provide technical and business inputs for the development of Power & Water strategy and commercial negotiations.
- Coordinate with technology providers and consultants to capture external insights and generate improvement initiatives.
- Identify, evaluate, and implement synergies, integration, and standardisation opportunities as agreed by management.
- Prepare briefings and recommendations for board members, providing relevant reviews and recommendations for decision-making and approvals.
Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills / Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 15 years of relevant industrial experience, including at least 10 years in a Power & Water Mechanical operational environment, with exposure to plant management and commercial/business development.
- Strong understanding of discounted cash flow valuation methods and financial metrics such as NPV, IRR, and ROCE.
- Excellent communication skills, with strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency in written and verbal English is essential.
- Proven negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Fully proficient in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and comfortable with the increasing use of AI technologies.
