Job Purpose

An industry-leading organisation in the energy and industrial sector is seeking a skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their dynamic team. This exciting opportunity allows you to contribute significantly to the company's strategic objectives by maximising the efficiency and performance of critical facilities. The role involves identifying opportunities for improvement, managing the execution of enhancement plans, and working closely with key stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the performance of existing facilities, ensuring that design targets, production yields, and operating philosophies are being met. Proactively identify any performance gaps and propose improvement initiatives.
  • Provide expert technical input on facility performance, focusing on reliability, operability, availability, and maintainability. Ensure the designs proposed for new projects are practical, realistic, and unlikely to cause future operational issues.
  • Identify areas for cost reductions and propose engineering solutions for plant improvements. Evaluate improvement proposals from both technical and economic perspectives.
  • Provide technical support during commercial and legal negotiations, ensuring that all technical aspects align with the organisation's operational needs.
  • Analyse work plans and budget submissions to ensure alignment with organisational priorities. Offer insights and propose actions to improve the effectiveness of asset management.
  • Verify Greenhouse Gas (GHG) submissions to ensure compliance with relevant procedures. Oversee the GHG verification process, ensuring its completion within the required timeframe.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, promoting knowledge transfer, skill development, and career progression. Support the implementation of nationalisation initiatives.
  • Perform heat and material balance calculations for proposed asset improvements, ensuring that all proposals are technically sound and suitable for economic evaluation.
  • Lead external benchmarking activities and formulate improvement plans to achieve top-tier performance in areas such as capacity, reliability, cost, and downtime.
  • Review operational and financial performance reports, generating internal management reports for leadership teams.
  • Provide technical and business insights for the development of strategic plans and commercial negotiations.
  • Develop a stakeholder management plan, collaborating with external consultants and technology providers to capture external insights and integrate them into improvement initiatives.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement opportunities for synergies, integration, and standardisation within operations.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (higher academic qualifications are advantageous).
  • At least 15 years of relevant industrial experience, with a minimum of 10 years in a plant management or similar operational environment. Exposure to commercial and business development activities is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of project design and execution strategies, as well as multi-disciplinary engineering activities.
  • Knowledge of financial metrics such as NPV, IRR, and ROCE, along with the ability to assess improvement proposals from both technical and financial perspectives.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a proven ability to make decisions and solve complex problems.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence key stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with relevant engineering software.
  • A proactive, resilient approach with the ability to deliver results under pressure and a strong commitment to continuous learning.
