Mud Engineer

Summary:

The Water Well Mud Engineer is responsible for designing, preparing, and managing drilling fluids (mud systems) for water well drilling operations. This role ensures optimal hole conditions, bit performance, formation stability, and fluid management in both air and mud rotary applications. The Mud Engineer works closely with drillers, superintendents, and geologists to monitor and adjust fluid properties to meet site-specific conditions and project requirements.

Responsibilities:

• Design and implement drilling fluid programs tailored for water well applications (including fresh water, polymer, and bentonite-based systems).
• Monitor mud properties (viscosity, weight, filtration, sand content, etc.) throughout drilling operations.
• Perform daily mud checks and maintain accurate records of fluid testing, additives used, and product inventory.
• Recommend and mix additives to maintain desired mud properties (e.g., fluid loss control, cuttings suspension, and borehole stability).
• Support development by coordinating fluid displacement, conditioning, and cleanout strategies.
• Diagnose and address downhole issues such as lost circulation, swelling clays, and formation stability.
• Maintain mud tanks, mixing systems, and solids control equipment.
• Collaborate with the drilling crew to ensure safe, efficient operations and communicate any mud-related concerns.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding mud disposal and spill prevention.
• Provide post-job reports and documentation for client and internal use.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or coursework in fluid mechanics, geology, or drilling operations preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in water well or geothermal drilling operations.
  • Knowledge of mud chemistry, additives, and their applications in varying soil and rock conditions.
  • Ability to interpret well logs, drilling reports, and geotechnical data.
• Preferred:
  • Certification in Drilling Fluids Technology or Mud Engineering.
  • OSHA 10/30-hour certification.
  • MSHA Certification

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Effective communication with field crews, superintendents, and clients.
• Proficiency in recordkeeping and basic computer use (Excel, digital reporting).
• Physically fit for field conditions, including lifting heavy materials, working in extreme weather, and remote site travel.

Working Conditions:

• Field-based role with frequent travel to drilling sites.
• Work performed outdoors in various weather conditions.
• May require long hours and rotating shifts depending on project demands.
