What role you will play in our team

ExxonMobil is seeking qualified and experienced individuals to provide wells engineering technical expertise for its oil and gas development projects. The primary role and responsibility of the Wells Engineer at ExxonMobil is to collaborate with a multi-functional team to design, plan, and execute all wellwork operations (spanning from drilling, completions, to well management), in compliance with internal and external standards. Well management operations include all wellwork post-completion; inclusive of drillouts, remedial workovers, and plug and abandonment. Other responsibilities of a Wells Engineer include well cost estimates, operations surveillance and performance analysis, risk assessments, equipment selection and procurement support. Business needs, the candidate's experience level, and areas of expertise will drive placement on a specific Wells team (team per asset/basin and discipline). We are looking for the best Experienced Wells Engineers to come join our Wells team!

What will you do

  • Responsible for developing operational programs for drilling and/or completions and/or workover activities, ensuring focus on operations integrity and regulatory compliance
  • Able to develop and optimize wellwork (drilling/ completions/ well management) designs for multi-well programs; competent with casing and/or tubing design, and able to effectively work with contractors to develop well path plans, fluids and cementing programs
  • Provides advanced technical support for drilling, completion, well intervention and/or well abandonment strategies to improve well designs, operational plans, and support issue resolution
  • Performs comprehensive risk management strategies, including but not limited to areas of SSH&E (Safety, Security, Health & Environmental) impacts, emergency preparedness, well control procedures and contingency planning
  • Performs modeling / analyses to support effective execution of drilling and/or completions and/or well servicing/intervention programs (e.g. including but not limited to torque and drag, hydraulics, and drill string / work string / BHA modeling for drilling execution)
  • Develops well cost estimates, and stewards well cost lifecycle and surveillance; assists management with budget planning activities
  • Supports contracting / tendering and procurement activities related to their well operations (drilling, completions and/or well management)
  • Manages multiple contractor interfaces, establishing effective working relationships while ensuring timely delivery of equipment and services; monitors Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and advises leadership on contractor performance
  • Assists with NPT / equipment failure investigations and follow-up reporting
  • Performs surveillance of daily drilling and/or completions and/or well management operations; highlights potential deviations from plan, analyses performance and provides recommendations on optimization opportunities to Wells Team leadership
  • Effectively collaborates with field-based Operations Supervisors and Remote Operation Centers to drive successful execution of well programs
  • Facilitates pre-well section meetings and post well after-action reviews with input from field operations team, engineering advisors and Wells Team leadership
  • Responsible final well reporting, including lessons learned captured and well cost reconciliations
  • Provides mentoring and coaching to less experienced Wells Engineers
  • Keeps abreast of the latest available technology and operational best practices for drilling and/or completions and/or well management operations

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering discipline
  • Prior Wells Engineering experience, preferably 5 - 15 years
  • High level of personal and professional integrity. Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills, able to manage self and lead others in a diverse work team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Able to adapt communication style between leading onsite team to relaying technical information to office based team.
  • Willing and able to travel to the well site to support global operations.

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

  • Prior experience working in areas of ExxonMobil assets: unconventional shale (preferably the Permian Basin (Midland and/or Delaware)) or deep-water
  • Familiarity with challenging well operation environments (e.g., deep-water, extended reach, managed pressure drilling, unconventional, high temperature / high pressure)
  • Interested in long-term career opportunities supporting global operation at ExxonMobil. There are many options available for Wells Engineer roles, work locations and schedules. Many work on the Houston campus with business trips to the field sites. Others work rotations, and/or relocate (domestic and/or international) as required per specific job roles. Examples: international rotational (e.g., 28 days on / 28 days off) assignments, domestic rotations (14 days on / 14 days off), and expatriate assignments.
