Job Description:

Facilities Management, Knowledge Enterprise Research Facilities Services, seeks an Energy Management Specialist (Building Automation and Control Technician) to perform work of a complex nature when operating, maintaining, and programming energy management and building automation systems that support various types of research, including the newest research building ISTB12 at the Polytechnic campus, which will support engineering laboratories that include cleanrooms, robotics, and battery research labs. This position will also support the Research building at ASU's Tempe campus along with the Polytechnic campus.

Essential Duties:
  • Perform air pressure, airflow measurements and make adjustments to meet standards.
  • Monitor and adjust systems to meet comfort level, laboratory environment.
  • Evaluate systems for effective energy usage and conservation; make, adjust, repair, replace as needed.
  • Use software and hardware in computers and microprocessors for system programming.
  • Modify existing programs, troubleshooting to maintain optimum system operation.
  • Perform database uploads and downloads to provide DDC controllers with current programs.
  • Verify correct system and control sequence operations.
  • Update air handlers' schedules upon request for air conditioning services.
  • Provide reports by accumulating data from multiple automation systems and/or software support programs.
  • Review, modify, and implement programming changes to building automation system to ensure efficient and effective system operations and conformance with standards and guidelines and energy savings.
  • Calibrate, repair, and replace building automation system sensing devices to specifications.
  • May dispatch trouble calls to appropriate personnel to respond to customer needs.
  • Study plans, drawings, specifications, and work order requirements.
  • Troubleshoot power supplies, controllers, and transducers; take corrective actions.
  • Use ability to communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions of the job.

Days and Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Salary Rate

$28.50 - $36.50 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with Siemens Building Automation Systems.
  • Evidence of Niagara AX certification.
  • May have to obtain EPA 608 Universal Chlorofluorocarbon Certification

Working Environment:

Work in extreme and varying temperatures, restricted movements, confined spaces (tunnels, manholes, vaults), and intense noise. Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 60 pounds is required. Work off ladders to download/upload field controls and relocate/install thermostats. Utilize hand tools (wire strippers, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, volt amp meter, temperature/humidity calibrator) and power tools (drill). Utilize computer (primarily Johnson Control and Phoenix Control software, but not limited to other third party control systems) to operate plant and building automation systems. Wear personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, face shield, gloves, safety shoes, noise protection). Drive University vehicle and/or cart to job site. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

This position requires working on-call and stand-by when necessary, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.

Driving Requirement:
This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
