Position Highlights

The Arizona Geological Survey is a non-academic research department at the University of Arizona tasked with furthering our understanding of the geology, mineral resources, and natural hazards of Arizona. We invite applications for the position of Seismic Technician (Research Technologist II). The Seismic Technician will assist the Researcher with installing and maintaining seismic equipment for the Arizona Geological Survey's seismic network. This includes assisting with the improvement and implementation of Earthworm, SeisNetWatch, AQMS, Jiggle and Seisan software.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work autonomously in 16 remote locations across Arizona.
  • Responsible for seismic station maintenance, including installation of specialized equipment and software, maintenance, expertise to troubleshoot issues on the spot, and ensuring general health associated with the seismic equipment. Make recommendations to supervisor for resolution of issues including equipment replacement, ordering, or software modification. Also suggestions to increase efficiency and updates using existing knowledge.
  • Assist with improving and implementing Earthworm, SeisNetWatch, AQMS, Jiggle and Seisan, specialized software used for detecting earthquakes. Software collects the data and processing source for the seismic stations. This software feeds other sources including USGS national database and hazards viewer to show strength and location of seismic activity. Ensure software is properly installed, work with supervisor to troubleshoot issues, and resolve to continue to ensure accuracy and function of the seismometers.
  • Processing and analyzing basic data on various software programs and servers collected by stations around the state, reviewed by supervisor for accuracy. This includes state of health analysis for the individual stations.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various Arizona environments, including but not limited to:
    • Ability to lift/move/transport up to 80 lbs. to install and replace equipment for seismic stations in the field. This may include deep-cycle marine batteries and sand used to bed sensors.
    • Ability to work for extended periods of time at remote sites.
    • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions including high winds, temperatures above 100 degrees, temperatures below 32 degrees, etc.
    • Ability to drive under varying weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in seismic operations, data collections, or a related field to include prior experience with Earthworm data acquisitions, Seisan and AQMS and Jiggle software.
