Description

General Purpose of the job:

SHINE Technologies is seeking a Principal Nuclear Equipment Design Lead to serve as the technical authority for the design and delivery of advanced nuclear equipment and subsystems. This highly specialized role resides within the Systems and Manufacturing group and requires deep expertise in advanced machining, plasma system design, high-voltage systems, magnetic optics, and materials science. The ideal candidate will lead complex development efforts and ensure solutions are innovative, manufacturable, and compliant with nuclear-grade performance and safety standards.

This engineer will integrate across mechanical, electrical, and physics-based domains, bridging detailed engineering with system-level performance, lifecycle durability, and regulatory requirements. They will lead high-risk, high-precision design programs from concept to deployment and act as the go-to expert for SHINE's most technically demanding nuclear hardware development initiatives.

The base hourly range for this position is $150 - $250 per hour. Our compensation ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the technical lead and design authority for custom-built nuclear-grade systems involving high-voltage, vacuum, plasma, and magnetically focused particle systems.
  • Lead the development of system architecture, component-level designs, and design validation strategies across complex, multidisciplinary domains.
  • Own the integration of machining-intensive hardware with advanced electrical and materials technologies, ensuring performance under extreme operating conditions.
  • Coordinate closely with supply chain, manufacturing, and test engineering to translate conceptual designs into manufacturable, inspectable, and serviceable hardware.
  • Provide direction to internal teams and external vendors on tolerance-critical components and assemblies, especially those involving magnetic, dielectric, or thermally sensitive materials.
  • Manage system-level risk identification and mitigation throughout the design lifecycle, especially in safety-classified or regulated environments.
  • Act as the primary technical interface to stakeholders, regulators, and customers for design reviews, safety evaluations, and issue resolution.
  • Coach and mentor engineering team members, establishing best practices in nuclear-grade system design, analysis, and documentation.

Requirements

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline; Master's or PhD preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience leading complex hardware design in high-performance or regulated industries such as nuclear, defense, aerospace, or medical devices.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least three of the following:
  • Advanced precision machining and fabrication
  • Plasma system or vacuum chamber design
  • Magnetic optics or charged particle beamline systems
  • High-voltage component design and integration
  • Radiation-resistant materials and material behavior under extreme conditions
  • Proven ability to own the full design lifecycle from requirements definition through manufacturing and system validation.
  • Deep knowledge of CAD, FEA, high-voltage safety principles, and technical documentation for regulated environments.
  • Strong systems engineering mindset with ability to balance competing requirements across safety, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Exceptional communication skills with experience leading cross-functional technical teams and engaging with regulatory and customer stakeholders.
