Context & Environment

TotalEnergies is significantly investing in wind energy as part of its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. TotalEnergies aims to produce about 50% of its energy in the form of low-carbon electricity by 2050, with a target of developing around 400 GW of gross renewable capacity.

TotalEnergies has a robust R&D Wind program, with over 13 GW of projects in development and construction. These projects are spread across various regions, including South Brittany and the Mediterranean in France, Germany, UK, Norway, and the United States.

Long term Company wind assets durability and profitability can be affected by climate change, and it is thus necessary to appreciate the risk it induces.

Climate change has a multifaceted impact on wind energy, influencing both the potential and operational aspects of wind power generation.

Climate change can alter wind patterns and speeds, which directly affects wind energy production. Some regions may experience increased wind speeds, enhancing energy generation, while others may see a decrease. For instance, future changes in wind speeds between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean are expected to vary due to differences in atmospheric circulation patterns and regional climate influences. Indeed, in Northern Europe, projections indicate an increase in wind speeds, particularly during the winter months. This is linked to the poleward shift of the North Atlantic jet stream, which can enhance westerly winds bringing moist and warm air to the region. This increase in wind speeds could lead to more frequent and intense windstorms in areas like the British Isles and parts of Northwestern Europe. In contrast, the Mediterranean region is expected to experience a decrease in wind speeds. This reduction is associated with an intensification of anticyclonic circulation, leading to more stable and less windy conditions. The changes in atmospheric circulation patterns, including higher mean sea level pressure, contribute to this decline.

These regional differences highlight the complex nature of climate change impacts on wind patterns.

In this context, we are seeking a motivated student, who is interested in supporting the energy transition, to work on the understanding and the assessment of the long-term changes in wind speed and its decadal variability in Europe with regards to the large-scale circulation patterns such as the North Atlantic Oscillation.

Activities

As a Assessing the decadal variability of wind speed over Europe in a climate change context and its potential implications for wind energy deployments M/F trainee, your missions will be :
  • Conduct literature reviews on the impact of climate change on wind speed over Europe and .
  • Analyze historical changes of the decadal variability of the wind speed using reanalysis data with respect to NAO index.
  • Assess the historical performances of the climate models (from CMIP6) to simulate the link between NAO index and surface wind over Europe.
  • Evaluate the future changes of NAO and its decadal variability with respect to the different climate scenarios (SSPs).

You will evolve within a team of experienced professionals and with a tutor-coach, the reference for your future profession. Individualized support will help you develop your autonomy and lead you to your diploma!
