ABOUT THE POSITION:
At Vermont Gas Systems, we do important work. We ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas services to over 55,000 Vermonters in Chittenden, Franklin, and Addison counties. A Gas Technician, Initial, is an important team member that serves on the Distribution and Maintenance Team and works on maintenance and replacement projects. They are responsible for learning methods and procedures to perform gas maintenance and installation work. This includes hand excavating, trenching to spot utilities, installing pipe, fittings and tracer wire.
They learn how to investigate, pinpoint, and repair leaks, conduct inspections on new construction, and become familiar with compliance tasks required by 49 CFR part 192. They work under the supervision of experienced Gas Technicians.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION:
- Becomes familiar with Vermont Gas Systems (VGS) policies, procedures, record keeping, compliance tracking, follows safe working practices and compliance, operational and safety procedures.
- Learns to safely operate tools and equipment normally used in gas facility maintenance and gas facility installations.
- Familiar with techniques use to mark underground pipelines.
- Learns compliance tasks required by the Code of Federal Regulations (CRF).
- Learns methods and procedures for investigating and repairing leaks.
- Assists Gas Technicians and Crew Chief in all duties.
- Learns how to document work and maintain appropriate records.
- Learns to use various forms of technology to perform their work including laptops, iPads, iPhones, GIS, GPS, and other electronic devices and applications.
- Maintain and calibrate tools and equipment used within the department.
- Follows procedures for safely working around natural gas pipelines and other utilities.
- Attends all required trainings, such as safety, compliance and monthly team meetings.
- Strives to obtain appropriate Operator Qualifications.
- Strives to obtain Natural Gas Certification.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS FOR THIS ROLE:
- Working knowledge of the principles of gas behavior, practices, and standards preferable.
- Ability to learn industry safety regulations including Vermont State Digsafe Laws.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of applicable codes and regulations to perform the work safely and ensure the safety of all crew members.
- Able to work during required hours, which includes overtime.
- Experience in troubleshooting and investigating a wide variety of situations.
- Works well within a team environment to accomplish goals.
- Must be comfortable using technology, such as tablets and smartphones as well as applicable software to complete job duties.
- Unrestricted automobile operator's license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK CONDITIONS:
- This position is Safety Sensitive and subject to appropriate drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Register 49 CFR-Section 199.
- Must be able to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.
- Prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping and reaching is required on a daily basis.
- May have to work on uneven ground and be exposed to dust, fumes, gases or odors.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required for specific job duties.
