Position: Mechanical Engineer
Duration: 4 Months
Reports to: Project Lead/Lead Engineer

Job Overview:
The Mechanical Engineer will report to the Project Lead or Lead Engineer, providing expertise in mechanical engineering during technical evaluations, project development, and execution. This role requires a solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, design, and practices. The engineer will collaborate closely with the Project Lead/Lead Engineer to ensure adherence to relevant codes and standards throughout various project stages. Additionally, the position demands a thorough understanding of Process Safety Management practices.

Safety Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring personal safety and the safety of colleagues. All work must be conducted following established safe practices and procedures, as outlined in the company's Safety Manual.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Apply mechanical engineering principles and ensure quality control/assurance for project deliverables across all engineering stages, from conceptual and pre-FEED design to front-end engineering design, detail engineering, construction, commissioning, and start-up.
  2. Perform mechanical engineering design calculations for conceptual and pre-FEED design packages, including basis of design and preliminary data sheets.
  3. Assist in verifying project designs, screening project options, and evaluating project alternatives.
  4. Conduct technical and economic analyses, applying mechanical engineering principles to assess existing plant operations for efficiency improvements and address chronic challenges.
  5. Ensure engineering solutions and designs comply with technical specifications, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  6. Provide mechanical engineering support for field project activities and execution.
  7. Contribute to the preparation of well-defined scopes of work, requests for proposals/invitations to bid, contracts, and basis of bids documents for project execution.
  8. Assist in preparing required project documentation, such as Gate Review Packages, and develop reports and presentations for assigned work and project deliverables.
  9. Perform project cost estimation, scheduling, and cost control under guidance.
  10. Monitor the performance of external resources to ensure compliance with design and contract specifications.
  11. Participate in JSRAs, Pre Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSRs), start-up planning, preparation, and commissioning.
  12. Engage in HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, What Ifs, Risk Assessments, Piping Model, and P&ID reviews to ensure compliance with design and accepted engineering practices.

Minimum Academic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Certification as a Registered Engineer with the Board of Engineering is an asset.

Minimum Relevant Experience:
  • Five (5) years of related experience in engineering within the petrochemical industry, oil and gas environment, or gas processing and terminal operations.

Skills & Knowledge Requirements:
  • Experience with hydrocarbon plant and terminal operations, including utility systems.
  • Knowledge of engineering concepts and best practices related to plant operations and design.
  • Familiarity with industry discipline codes and standards used in hydrocarbon processing facilities.
  • Proficiency in the stage gate process approach to project development and execution.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Project software for schedule development, monitoring, and control.
  • Understanding and application of Process Safety Management (PSM) elements.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Effective presentation skills.
