About the Opportunity:
Shell Canada is seeking for an Automation Programmer (also known as Automation Specialist internally) to join their Operational Technical Team. This role involves providing support to all facilities and interfacing with Infrastructure and Brownfield Projects teams, providing support and awareness to operational requirements.
Accountabilities:
- Perform automation activities covering all key areas of development, maintenance, programming
- Analyze and explore improvements for maintenance/design/reliability on Controls & Automation system covering Safety Instrumented Systems, Fire & Gas, Programmable Logic Controllers
- Conduct bad actor analysis for nuisance trips based on SAP notifications and perform remote troubleshooting
- Ensure Functional Safety and Safety Instrumented System (SIS) requirements for SIF/SIL validation, verification and Safety Life Cycle Plan
- Provide support on HAZID, HAZOP, SIS/IPF Classification studies, and any other relevant studies pertaining to engineering
- Conduct or support failure analysis of automation failures or incidents
- Identify unit performance improvement opportunities and reliability risks, and work with area team to determine and implement cost effective solutions
- Gatekeeper for critical documents, including C&E, Control Narratives, Alarm Tables
- Review and improve existing strategies and procedures in timely manner as per latest technical and maintenance requirements
- Identify automation equipment obsolescence planning and upgrade strategies
- Author Facility Changes (MOC) within the automation/PACO discipline and provide Technical Assurance of facility/wells logic changes
- Own, lead and resolve Asset threats and opportunities with cost effective, root cause solutions
- Support contract automation technicians
- Contract owner/Holder duties with automation companies
- Develop and participate in Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT)
- Act as a site focal point for Operational Technical Security (OTS) interfaces and activities
- Manage field system telecoms and maintain 98% reliability
- Develop Turnaround scopes and manage the execution of automation activities
Skills & Requirements
- Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
- Engineering degree or trade certification in Instrumentation & Controls, Automation or Electrical
- Proficient with programming PLC's, HMI, and RTU'S such as Rockwell, Yokogawa, Emerson or Bristol is required
- Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in the Control & Automation Engineering discipline and a good understanding of the Maintenance process/system in Oil & Gas processing
- Prior experience and exposure in Operations and Maintenance
- Sound knowledge in Instrumentation and Controls, with working experience in field instruments, control systems such as SCADA, PLC, HMI, or Telecommunications
- Experienced in engineering solutions and driving plant changes in an operating environment
- Exposure to Preventive/ Corrective/breakdown maintenance and turnarounds
- Experience in engineering solutions, driving plant changes, and managing projects in an operating environment, FAT/SAT participation experience is an advantage
