Description

Position Summary
An HVAC Technician III is primarily responsible for performing installs, repairs and maintenance to a variety of equipment including: refrigeration, air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, hermetic compressors, light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, intake and exhaust fans, economizers, humidifiers, capacity controls, semi-hermetic compressors, split systems, flame safeguard controls, air compressors, air driers, pneumatic control systems, air cooled chillers, self-contained, packaged units, and basic knowledge of control systems. This is a safety sensitive position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Fully understands the basic refrigeration cycles to include identifying components in refrigeration circuit, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the refrigeration circuit, using manifold gauge set, pressure/temperature chart and temperature measuring devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot. Understands refrigeration recovery, evacuation, and charging, understands the installation and sizing of refrigerant piping.
  • Fully understands basic heating cycle to include identifying components in heating system, understanding how each component works, diagnosing problems in the heating system using a gas pressure test and other devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot. Fully the basic understands the theory of combustion and how it relates to combustible fuels such as gas and oil.
  • Fully understands electron theory, how electricity travels, AC and DC currents, single phase and three phase circuits, and series and parallel circuits. Ability to read wiring advanced wiring diagrams. Knowledge of Ohms Law. Ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values. Must be able to troubleshoot advanced electrical circuits.
  • Fully understands the fundamentals of temperature and humidity measurement and control in air conditioning units. Understands the process of treating air to simultaneously control its temperature, humidity, cleanliness and distribution. Ability to use a psychometric chart to determine the results of mixing air having various properties.
  • Fully understands the basics of multiple systems and how each component within the system operates in conjunction with the other components and how that impacts the overall operations of the system as a whole. These systems include air cooled, water cooled, hot water systems, chilled water systems, VAV systems, steam heating systems.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows operating system
  • Communicates with Service Manager on a frequent basis regarding scheduling and work in progress.
  • Participates in meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Prepares written materials to document activities and log information as required by the job site or Company procedures.
  • Provides assistance during emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns, operating safety
  • A Technician III must be able to proficiently perform the following tasks
  1. Soldering
  2. Brazing
  3. Combustion analysis
  4. Heat load calculations
  5. Heat loss calculations
  6. Cooling load calculations
  7. Basic navigation thru multiple building automation controls systems
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective processes, completion of projects and smooth operation of department.
  • Must be flexible with hours, shifts, and geographic locations with reasonable notice.
  • Represents CEC Companies to the client by a clean and neat appearance on the job.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required, on call and as needed.
  • Transports tools, equipment and supplies to job site as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring vehicle is properly cleaned and maintained and for maintaining a clean and safe driving record.
Education and Experience
  • Must have an Apprentice License and EPA Certification and at least six (6) months of trade-related work experience, OR.
  • Any similar combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate, high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Manufacturer equipment certifications
  • Multiple seminar certifications
Required Skill, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of English (ability to read, speak and write) while performing work-related tasks.
  • Clean driving record and valid drivers license.
  • Must be able to repair, adjust, maintain, retrofit and troubleshoot the following equipment:
  1. Refrigerant controls (metering devices)
  2. DX Systems small to large tonnage/chilled water system/cooling tower/pums/VEDs
  3. Hermetic and semi-hermetic compressors
  4. Heat pumps to 25-ton
  5. Split systems to 50-ton
  6. Packaged units to 200-ton
  7. All types and sizes of ductless splits
  8. Electric Motors (3-phase and 1-phase)
  9. Electric motor controls (contractors, starters, relays, disconnects, thermostats, etc.)
  10. Light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners and related controls (oil and gas)
  11. All types and sizes of water pumps
  12. Intake and exhaust fans
  13. Unit heaters (hot water, steam and electric)
  14. Economizers
  15. Humidifiers
  16. Capacity Controls (unloader, hot gas bypass valves, fan cycling controls, motor masters)
  17. Flame safeguard controls
  18. Air compressors,
  19. Air driers
  20. Reciprocating chillers
  21. VAVs systems
  22. VAV controls
  23. VAV terminal boxes
  24. Large Gravity type boilers
  25. Large Power flame type boilers
  26. Variable frequency drives
  27. Various types and sizes of cooling towers
  28. Various types and sizes boilers
  29. Various types and sizes steam generators
  30. Various types of static pressure controls
  31. Pneumatic control systems
  32. Various types and sizes of computer room systems
  33. Various types and sizes glycol cooling systems
  34. Understanding of variable frequency drives
  35. Air Cooled Chillers 100 tons
  36. Self-Contained up to 100 tons
  • Must be willing to travel 5% (Austin, Houston, and San Antonio)

  1. Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull and reach overhead.
  2. Lift 51 pounds, routinely. Constantly move about on the feet.
  3. Climb ladders of all types.
  4. Complete full day assignments involving overhead work.
  5. Must be able to make transition from employee parking area or street into construction work areas and to access all levels of the building, even if the only means of access is by O.S.H.A. approved site construction ladder or stairs still under construction, but acceptable for use.
  6. Must be capable of securing tools and materials from storage areas to complete assigned tasks.
  7. Possess good vision, normal or corrected. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision to discern color coded wires, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  8. Possess good hearing, normal or corrected.
  9. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) at all times.
  10. Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, and overtime as required and night shifts, as needed. This position requires flexible work hours. In order to get a project completed on time, this position is often required to work overtime, weekends, and night shifts.
  11. Must be able to work in the presence of customers and their representatives with little or no interference or disruption to the customer while maintaining a professional and courteous image.
