Purpose Of Position

Performs heavy manual labor and support of plant operations/water supply personnel; to repair, maintain, and operate water supply/water and wastewater treatment systems.
Essential Functions

  • Mow and rake grass, trim trees, brush, etc. using power tools and hand tools.
  • Assist in repairing, installing, and routine maintenance of water/wastewater treatment equipment/facilities.
  • Assist with loading/unloading of materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Sweeps, mops, cleans floor, walls, bathrooms, offices, and storeroom.
  • Pick up trash/empty trash drums.
  • Cut and load trash, limbs, brush, and debris for disposal.
  • Paints equipment/facilities/related structures, assists in constructing various structures with lumber (i.e. shelves, toilets, piers, steps, etc.)
  • Repair various structures, such as walls, sidewalks, concrete curbs, gates, windows, and doors using hand/power tools.
  • Drive pickup truck to run errands.
  • Work requires being onsite.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED preferred. Utility experience preferred. Must have knowledge of the names and safe use of hand and power tools; such as, power saws, crescents, shovels, pumps, pipe cutters, tampers, picks, jack hammers, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, etc. Must possess a valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License, with clear driving record. Must be able to work weekends and overtime as required.
Needed Skills:
  • Must have a working knowledge and ability to maintain power equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, and power tools.
  • Must be able to read/speak English; understand and carry out oral instructions; work effectively with other employees.
  • Must be able to read and understand manufacturer's manual of operation of power equipment.
  • Must be able to fill out equipment operation logs in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Must be able to safely lift, carry, push and pull up to 25 pounds occasionally; stand, walk, 1 - 8 hours daily; climb, balance, stoop, bend, crouch and crawl, occasionally.
  • Must have good vision and hearing.

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
