The Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) Division is seeking a flexible number of summer interns to support ongoing NSE programs and projects. The NSE division and its predecessors at Argonne National Laboratory pioneered the application of nuclear fission for energy generation and maintained world-leading capabilities for developing innovative reactor and fuel cycle systems. Areas of in-depth expertise include reactor and fuel cycle physics, thermal hydraulics, fuels and materials development, radiochemistry and nuclear-chemical engineering, structural mechanics, nuclear nonproliferation, security, and safeguards.

The candidate is expected to support R&D staff members to perform computational analysis or experimental work under general guidance and produce documents describing the results of development work, analyses, and investigations.

Knowledge and experience with the following:
  • Strong knowledge of mathematics, physics, and engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices. •
  • Knowledge in one or more of the specialized area of nuclear engineering, such as reactor physics, thermal-hydraulics, fuels and materials, structural mechanics, etc.
  • Strong skills in the use of computers and the analysis of computational or experimental results.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Skilled in oral and written communications and presentations at all levels of the organization.
  • A successful candidate must be able to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited institution and have completed at least one semester of schooling by the start of the program.
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
  • Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test.
  • Studying nuclear, mechanical, chemical engineering, computational science, or similar fields.
  • Provide (2) professional reference and academic advisor contact information (if/when selected).
