Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Program Manager of First Generation in the Shepard Academic Resource Center (SARC), the First-Generation (FGEN) Community Engagement Coordinator is a yearlong position responsible for assisting with the coordination, development, and implementation of all on-campus engagement and FGEN programming initiatives. These initiatives include but are not limited to overseeing event planning, promoting participation in academic and social events, co-managing a team of FGEN Engagement Ambassadors with the Program Manager, and creating opportunities that promote community building and student success for first-generation students.

The Community Engagement Coordinator serves as the primary guide and support for the Engagement Ambassadors team, providing guidance, and supporting the team's success in executing program events. This includes supporting the planning and promotion of events, co-leading weekly team meetings, and fostering a productive and collaborative team environment. The Community Engagement Coordinator will additionally assist in leading and contributing to the monthly All FGEN Staff Meetings. This role is essential to maintaining an inclusive, student-centered FGEN community while promoting the program's mission of supporting first-generation students through various events, resources, and community engagement.

This position spans February 2025 - April 2026. Compensation for this role is $15.95/hour until July 2025, after which it will mirror the Portland Metro minimum wage.

Please note:

If selected as an FGEN Coordinator, you are required to attend FGEN Staff training the week before the start of classes in August 2025 (tentatively Aug. 17th-22nd), and you CANNOT serve in any Residence Life, ASUP Executive, or Orientation roles, or participate in any other role that will that interfere with the training schedule or duties of the Community Engagement Coordinator position.

Core Duties

Job duties are subject to change based on programmatic needs.

  • Advises the planning and execution of all FGEN program events, including academic workshops, career development activities, social events, and community-building initiatives.
  • Maintain a comprehensive event calendar and communicate upcoming events to the community.
  • Collaborate and participate in required meetings for the role.
    • Meet weekly with the Program Manager to provide progress updates and address any challenges or needs.
    • Co-lead weekly Engagement Team meetings with the Program Manager to guide Engagement Ambassadors and foster a collaborative, accountable environment.
    • Participate in monthly meetings with the Program Manager and other FGEN coordinators to align on goals and share updates.
    • Contribute to and attend the All FGEN Staff Meetings throughout the semester.
  • Create and implement the marketing strategies and outlines used by the Engagement Ambassadors for events, utilizing social media, email lists, flyers, and campus communication channels to ensure strong participation.
  • Develop and analyze surveys and feedback to assess event effectiveness and use insights to improve programming.
  • Track and report event participation, student engagement, and other metrics to guide future decisions.
  • Assist with recruiting FGEN students for programs and events, managing RSVP systems, and coordinating transportation as needed.
  • Support recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new Engagement Ambassadors.
  • Contribute to broader FGEN initiatives, such as workshops, trainings, and social activities, and perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Be a current first-generation, full-time student enrolled at the University of Portland.
  • In good academic standing at the University (and maintain standing throughout the duration of the position).
  • Must be entering their second year or higher of studies for the upcoming fall term.
  • Ability to commit 10-12 hours per week to the role, with additional availability during training and major events.
  • Availability to work during summer 2025, including required training and preparation week from August 17th-22nd, 2025 (subject to change).
  • Creativity to build and sustain assigned aspects within the first-generation program.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal) with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Ability to think critically, solve problems independently, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute events, from concept through completion.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with staff, students, and campus partners.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and creating a welcoming environment for first-generation students.
  • Submission of two recommendations (one from a UP faculty member and one from an advisor or supervisor in areas such as employment, research, internships, clubs, or ROTC) by the stated deadline (01/23/25).

Preferred Qualifications
