What role you will play in our team
Are you interested in joining Imperial as an Engineering Student? We are looking for someone excited to contribute to meaningful work, who is passionate about safety, interested in building positive relationships and working within a strong team environment! We currently have an opportunity within our Kearl mine technical teams.
The technical team supports the Kearl mine site which has been in operation since 2012, and is located roughly 70 km north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Oil sand ore is mined using electric and hydraulic shovels, hauled, crushed and mixed with water prior to sending the slurry through hydro transport lines for processing to our plants. Kearl is a fly in fly out operation with transportation hubs located in Edmonton and Calgary.
Kearl is one of Canada's highest quality oil sands deposits and represents the next generation of oil sands mining. Innovative technology is at the heart of Kearl. We've developed innovative approaches that enhance performance and reduce cost. The site is currently operating 81 fully autonomous 797 haul trucks using Caterpillar's minestar system, making it one of the largest autonomous fleets in the world.
What you will do
Kearl Mining Engineering Student
Being a part of our mine engineering team you will learn skills in mine planning and design. Our teams cover a wide range of scopes from supporting day to day active mine operations, planning for the development of future mine pits, and planning for the closure landscape of Kearl. Responsibilities could include data analytics, mine fleet assessments, pit design, material movement, and water management. You will be offered a wide range of duties where collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team will gain you valuable insight and experience into open pit mining operations.
Kearl Tailings Planning Engineering Student
You will be part of the mine and tailings planning team learning skills in tailings planning, fluid tailings management, fines treatment and tailings modeling/mass balance. You will be working closely with a multi-disciplinary technical team including mine planning, geotechnical engineering, and reclamation/closure planning in support of our two operational tailings facilities and future planned facilities.
Kearl Geotechnical Engineering Student
You will support the Geotechnical Engineering team and assist with design, surveillance, and reporting for Kearl's earth structures, including tailings dykes, overburden disposal areas, roads, and pit walls. You will have the opportunity to interface with interdisciplinary teams and gain a working understanding of mine and tailings planning. Specific duties could include using Slope/W to complete stability analysis in support of earth structure designs, working with field staff to evaluate construction deviations, and reviewing geotechnical instrumentation to understand the performance of earth structures that are currently under construction.
All positions include use of area specific engineering software.
