Description
The Wastewater Collection Manager at the City of Durango is the operator in charge of our city's wastewater collection system. In this role, you'll oversee a team responsible for the operation and maintenance of our collection distribution system and lift stations. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Additionally, you'll be responsible for data analysis, technical tasks, and coordinating with other City departments and external organizations.
Essential Job Duties

What You'll Do in This Role:
  • Lead, develop, and manage a high-performing team through recruitment, hiring, and training; address performance issues and implement disciplinary actions when needed.
  • Foster a safety-conscious work culture through regular training and evaluations.
  • Assist in developing and managing the division budget, including resource allocation and capital improvement projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards.
  • Track and manage equipment history, maintenance schedules, and asset lifecycles.
  • Monitor and analyze system performance data and prepare reports.
  • Oversee maintenance and repair activities, including preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records of facility operations, including pumping records, wastewater overflows, metering records, repair records, and more.
  • Stock critical spare parts for emergency system repairs.
  • Represent the division on boards, commissions, and committees, preparing and presenting reports.
  • Conduct studies and provide recommendations for improving wastewater collection systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervise and manage resources, including time, materials, and equipment.
  • Respond to and resolve public and interdepartmental inquiries.
  • Oversee SCADA system operations and staff training for proper system use.
  • Collaborate on capital projects and maintain positive working relationships with contractors, engineers, and other outside organizations.
  • Maintain training schedules and records for team members.

Minimum Qualifications

You Have:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; college coursework in chemistry, biology, construction technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Four years of wastewater collection system operations and maintenance experience, including two or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid CDL license, Class III Wastewater Collection License, and ability to obtain ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 certifications.
  • Knowledge of wastewater collection principles, including biology, chemistry, and mathematics, as well operations, maintenance, repairs, and regulatory compliance.
  • Leadership skills and experience training, motivating, and evaluating teams.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Commitment to following standard safety practices.
