What You Will Do

The Gas Transfer Systems Group (Q-7) is responsible for design, development, production liaison, surveillance, and stewardship of all gas transfer systems for LANL nuclear packages in the US nuclear weapon stockpile. The group is the programmatic tenant in two R&D facilities at LANL: The Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF) and a high-pressure gas transfer system laboratory. Emphasis is the delivery of programmatic objectives via engineering excellence, personnel safety, security, compliance, and programmatic hardware reliability and availability. The successful candidate will team with the Q-7 chief Engineer to plan technical activities and provide strong team and personnel leadership. This teaming will include operational activities within laboratory environments/facilities associated with gas transfer system-related research and development, design, qualification, production and surveillance.

The Q-7 Group Leader will work with the Division Leader, Deputy Division Leader and Q-Division managers to develop and foster effective teams across the Group and Division in such areas as: operational planning, strategic planning, program implementation, co-execution of weapons development projects and deliverables. The group leader will be responsible for managing ES&H, security, recruiting, staffing, performance appraisals, employee development, resolving personnel issues and salary management for the group. The ideal candidate should bring a strong understanding of the complex-wide posture for gas transfer systems and tritium science.

This posting is under the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALDW).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering

Mechanical, Chemical, Systems or related Engineering experience with working knowledge of complex systems capable of leading a group to solve difficult problems. Demonstrated experience successfully managing complex tests and experiments while fostering safe, secure, and compliant programs. Documented experience working across multiple groups, functions and facilities to successfully deliver on milestones.

Program Development

Demonstrated utilization of project management principles and tools to delivering product on schedule, while engaging multiple projects with differing priorities. Demonstrated experience in program development, advocacy, and strategic planning. Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

Management/Communication

Demonstrated record of successful leadership within a line organization, including support of performance and salary management, budgeting, recruitment, conflict resolution, and developing staff growth opportunities and matching resource skills to mission needs while demonstrating commitment to safety, security, environment, and quality. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and internal and external customers.

Education/Experience : BS degree in engineering or science from an accredited school and 8 years of related experience is required. MS or PhD degree is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Laboratory weapons research and programmatic activities
  • Familiarity with the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise, LANL's Design Agency role and methodology of role execution
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers; strong teaming skills
  • Demonstrated experience with management of hazardous and/or nuclear operations/facilities within all applicable safety and security requirements while advancing programmatic objectives
  • Working knowledge of LANL nuclear facility requirements including Safety Basis and Formality of Operations
  • Prior experience in directing the administration of research and development employees including, forecasting staffing requirements, directing assignments, assuring workforce development, monitoring performance and initiating personnel actions
  • Demonstrated human resource experience with conflict resolution and in objectively dealing with performance issues
  • Promotion of institutional objectives of safety, security and environmental preservation
  • Active Q clearance

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
