About the Opportunity
The HVAC Field Technician position requires atechnician who can take ownership of over 100 systems statewide, implementing amaintenance schedule and responding to emergency repairs all over the state.The ability to travel statewide, occasionally on short notice, is necessary. The primary purpose of the HVAC Field Technician is to maintain, repair and install the HVACsystems and their associated control systems that provide cooling forapproximately 50 broadcast television transmission sites. The transmissionsites are located all over North Carolina, some in easily accessible areas andothers in remote locations and mountaintops. This position is responsible forscheduling and performing routine maintenance and repairs of HVAC systems thatrange from 1 ton mini-split systems to 25-ton package units. This position isalso responsible for unplanned emergency repairs whenever the need arises. Thisincludes replacement/installation of mini-split systems. Other field staff willbe available for assistance as necessary. This position will serve as theworking supervisor in the construction, modification, or repairs completed byindependent contractors. This position is designated as an Essential positionrequiring employee to be at work during severe weather and significant events.

UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina,within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station. This HVACField Technician services systems across the state of NC and can be based outof the central part of the state; however, the technician must be available forstatewide responses, as necessary.

About the Team
The PBS North Carolina Technology Division is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the statewide broadcast network and studio production infrastructure.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
High school diploma or equivalency and two years ofexperience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination oftraining and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriatelyaccredited institutions.

Required Competencies
*Current certification by the Environmental ProtectionAgency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40,Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
*Valid driver's license
*Working knowledge of refrigeration theory.
*Working knowledge of operating (BAU) building automation systems.
*Working knowledge of troubleshooting (DDC) Direct DigitalControls.
*Basic knowledge of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot andrepair complex electrical control circuits.
*Considerable knowledge of the design and operation of centrifugaland reciprocal compressors.
*Considerable knowledge of the design and operation of pneumaticcontrol systems.
*Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, andequipment used in the maintenance and repair of air-conditioning andrefrigeration equipment.
*Ability to train and supervise other workers.
*Ability to design smaller air-conditioning systems or designmodifications to larger systems.
*Ability to review and critique plans and specifications forair-conditioning systems.

Special Physical/Mental RequirementsWork Schedule: 7am - 530pm, M-Th, weekly overnight travel is routinelyrequired.
Occasional overtime and weekend work.
Position drives approx. 800 miles a week
Ability to lift and move heavy equipment and materials.
Willingness to work in various environmental conditions, includingheights and confined spaces.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills*Strong knowledge of HVAC systems,controls, and energy management.
*Excellent problem-solving skillsand knowledge of HVAC systems, including chillers, air handlers, andrefrigeration units,
and ability to work independentlyin the field.
*Off road/rough terrain driving skills.
