Position Highlights

The Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Geomechanics, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2025. This position is part of a multi-year hiring initiative within the department.

We seek outstanding faculty with a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and a strong potential for research. We are especially interested in candidates who will contribute to the growth of our program, enhance our academic community, and provide impactful service to the university.

The successful candidate will develop a dynamic, externally funded research program in geomechanics, with applications in mining and geological engineering. We welcome a broad range of research interests within this field, including: modeling, open pit and/or underground mine hazard assessment and mitigation, slope stability, tailings design and investigation, sensing, data science, and artificial intelligence applications in geomechanics.

Candidates with a background in solid mechanics and experience in material characterization (deformation, damage, and fracture) of heterogeneous materials, including rock, are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience designing innovative experimental setups to complement our existing rock mechanics laboratory is also highly desirable.

We are seeking candidates who are eager to collaborate with colleagues within the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering and across the university, including the School of Mining and Mineral Resources, Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics, Materials Science and Engineering, Geosciences, the Geotechnical Center of Excellence, and the Tailings Center. Strong ties to the mining industry are also welcome.

The successful candidate will be committed to teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in mining and geological engineering. A willingness to teach courses in rock mechanics, fracture mechanics, and underground construction, as well as develop advanced courses in computational geomechanics, is essential.

In addition to research and teaching, the successful candidate will mentor students (including those from underrepresented backgrounds), contribute to scholarly activities within the university community, and engage in interdisciplinary research and educational activities that align with the University Strategic Plan.

Review of applications will begin on January 30, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; sick leave and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; retirement plans; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
