Job Description

The HVAC Controls Technician keeps the Central Energy Plant operating efficiently and safely in order to provide heating and cooling to the UTC campus.

Responsibilities

Most of these duties are performed 100% of the time. Operation of high temperature and high-pressure systems and heavy equipment such as boilers and chillers present in the Central Plant require constant attention and monitoring; unattended operation could be extremely hazardous for the safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Operation, repair, and maintenance of four 400° High Temperature Hot Water Generators and associated equipment
  • Operation, repair, and maintenance of Chilled and High Temperature Hot Water (400°, 300 psi) distribution system for campus heating and cooling
  • Operation, repair, and maintenance of four 1500-ton electric centrifugal chillers, cooling towers and associated equipment
  • Performs plant operation in such a way that operational procedures are followed and operating parameters, including energy use guidelines, are followed including, operation of and operating data entry into computer control/management systems
  • Assists in training and oversight of new employees in these and other safe and efficient plant operational procedures
  • Performs chemical analysis on plant systems and adjusts chemical setting for treating systems
  • Assists in other plant functions as required

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Skilled in operation, repair, and maintenance of valves, pumps, boilers, chillers, piping, air compressors, fans, and an array of other mechanical equipment
  • Institutional knowledge of large chilled and hot water distribution systems

Qualifications

Minimum: Requires a high school diploma and four years' relevant experience in operating boilers and associated equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional experience as an Assistant Power Plant Operator may be required before assuming the Senior Power Plant Operator position.

Preferred: Vocational or technical certification; one year of experience in boiler operation, and operation of forklifts, hand tools, and small power equipment is preferred.
