System One is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Design and Shielding Engineer for a long-term, fully remote contract.

In this role, you will:

  • Perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors and medical isotope separation facilities, calculating dose, activation rates, half-thicknesses, DPA rates, energy deposition rates, and gas production rates.
  • Develop radiation source terms based on materials activation analysis for non-fuel in-vessel components.
  • Design and analyze new systems to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Conduct sensitivity studies to evaluate the effects of modeling assumptions, including model geometry complexity, meshing, variance reduction techniques, transport options, and cross-section preparation. Modify methods as needed.
  • Establish and maintain documentation of analysis results and radiation shielding design solutions.

Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering or equivalent experience with 5+ years of related experience; an advanced degree and 5+ years of nuclear analysis experience preferred.
  • Knowledgeable or motivated to quickly learn nuclear reactor design concepts and support the engineering team.
  • Experience in core and/or radiation shielding design and analysis.
  • Criticality safety experience.
  • Strong computational expertise with a passion for using computers to solve complex problems.
  • Familiarity with radiation shielding software such as Attila, MCNP, ADVANTG, Serpent, MAVRIC, MicroShield, ORIGEN, SCALE, OpenMC, Whisper, PARTISN, etc.
  • Experience with depletion software like ORIGEN.
  • Familiarity with nuclear core analysis software like ARMI, DIF3D, MC2, DRAGON, etc.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Space Claim/ANSYS, Cubit).
  • Knowledge of nuclear and numerical methods (activation analysis, dose rates, PDEs, dynamics, particle transport, isotopic depletion, nuclear data).
  • Strong verbal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work within regulatory guidelines for nuclear reactor design.
  • Fast reactor experience preferred.
  • Software development experience for nuclear applications is a plus.
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Git, C++, Fortran).
  • Experience in NQA-1 quality program environments is desired.
  • Maintain software by addressing enhancement requests and bug fixes with the team.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate trust, integrity, professionalism, communication, and a commitment to fostering teamwork.

If you are passionate about nuclear engineering and want to contribute to innovative projects, we encourage you to apply.
