We are looking for an experienced lead engineer to work with an industry respected group of rolling stock specialists who provide technical support in rail projects at all levels of the industry from heritage fleets to new build rolling stock. This includes design, compliance, incident investigation, vehicle refurbishments and life extension.

This is an opportunity for you to provide expert guidance and advice on a huge variety of projects both for your peers and external clients while utilising a range of consultancy skills including: expert judgement, hand calculation, computational analysis and development of bespoke analysis routines and processes. The team has a wide client base including train and equipment manufacturers, operators, owners and overhaulers.

The Role:

In this role you will be responsible for the delivery of mechanical engineering projects to clients or internal project teams for the Mechanical Systems team. It is not envisaged that line management will form a part of this role, however experience of effective technical leadership and team working is required.

You will have the following responsibilities:

Your Purpose:
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging trends and changes to legislation to maintain team competence and resilience in all markets.
  • Work collaboratively with teams from the wider AtkinsRéalis to leverage capability for effective delivery of rolling stock projects. Work closely with clients to understand their requirements and aspirations, and to identify and agree scopes of work.
  • Develop and sign-off costed proposals (full scope or specific elements of scope for multi-discipline jobs).
  • Lead delivery of high-quality work to clients according to agreed scopes, timescales and budgets. Provide specialist technical expertise to other delivery teams to support delivery of multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Maintain a working understanding of relevant standards. Act as a role model, mentoring and developing colleagues through knowledge and experience transfer.
  • Authoring, checking and approval of technical reports.

Example work activities:
  • The role does not necessarily require applicants with experience in all the following areas, these are provided as examples of the projects you could be supporting us in:
  • Supporting train manufacturers, overhauler, owners and operators in:
  • The introduction of new rolling stock through design scrutiny in support of the Certification Body.
  • Cost reduction through component condition assessment and maintenance optimisation.
  • Investigation of in-service issues / problem solving.
  • Devising practical repair solutions.
  • Improving system reliability through the review of fault data and recommendation for modifications.
  • Undertaking Project Manager/Project Director role for projects managed by the Mechanical Systems team.
  • Identify technical, commercial and safety risks associated with projects and ensure these are managed through each project phase.

We'd Love to Hear from You If You Have:
  • Degree qualified, Chartered Engineer or similar status in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Proven expertise in the principles of railway vehicle / systems mechanical technology.
  • Experience of leading technical delivery as a line manager or a technical leader in another capacity.

Experience in more than one of the following areas:
  • Bogies and suspension.
  • Wheelsets.
  • Bearings.
  • Braking systems and performance.
  • Doors.
  • Corrosion repairs and fabrication.

• Good communication and presentation skills, and the ability to write clear and concise text.

Language Skills:

• Fluent in English
