Exowatt is a next generation renewable energy company offering commercial and industrial customers a modular full-stack energy solution that can provide dispatchable power and heat for up to 24 hours per day, specifically designed to meet the needs of energy-intensive applications such as data centers. Our mission is clear, to make sustainable renewable energy always available and almost free. Exowatt is based in Miami, Florida and backed by notable investors such as a16z, Atomic, and Sam Altman.

We are seeking an experienced Power Systems Engineer to lead the balance of plant (BoP) design and integration of our Exowatt P3 modules into customer sites. This role will be responsible for ensuring seamless integration of our modules into various grid, behind-the-meter, and microgrid configurations. This highly cross-functional position requires collaboration across engineering, customers, EPCs, and developer partners to ensure successful deployment of our systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in microgrid design, power generation projects, and grid interconnection with a deep understanding of power systems engineering principles.

Key Responsibilities:
    • Balance of Plant (BoP) Design: Lead the design and specification of electrical balance of plant components, including transformers, switchgear, inverters, and protection systems.
    • System Integration: Ensure seamless integration of P3 modules with customer infrastructure, microgrids, and utility grids, optimizing for efficiency, reliability, and compliance.
    • Interconnection & Compliance: Develop interconnection strategies for various applications, ensuring compliance with IEEE 1547, UL 1741, NEC, and local utility interconnection requirements.
    • Microgrid & Power Distribution Design: Design and model microgrids and distributed energy systems, integrating power electronics, load management, and grid synchronization.
    • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal engineering teams, EPCs, developers, and customers to align technical requirements, coordinate project execution, and resolve integration challenges.
    • Power System Modeling & Analysis: Utilize tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, PSS/E, or PowerWorld to analyze power flows, short circuit scenarios, transient stability, and protection coordination.
    • Protection & Control Strategies: Define protection schemes, relay settings, and control logic to ensure system stability, grid compliance, and operational safety.
    • Testing & Commissioning: Support commissioning and validation of P3 deployments, ensuring systems meet performance and reliability expectations.
    • Technical Documentation: Develop engineering specifications, single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection coordination studies, and technical reports to support system deployment and operation.

Qualifications:
    • Educational Background: BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field.
    • Experience: 7+ years of experience in power systems engineering, microgrid design, or power generation projects.
    • Technical Proficiency: Deep knowledge of power electronics, transformers, switchgear, protective relays, inverters, and power system stability.
    • Microgrid & Renewable Integration: Experience integrating solar, battery storage, or thermal power generation into islanded and grid-connected microgrid architectures.
    • Regulatory & Standards Knowledge: Familiarity with IEEE 1547, UL 1741 SA, NFPA 70 (NEC), FERC/NERC standards, and utility interconnection processes.
    • Simulation & Analysis: Proficiency in ETAP, PSCAD, PSS/E, PowerWorld, HOMER, or similar modeling tools for power system design and grid integration.
    • Project Execution: Experience working with EPCs, utilities, and developers to successfully deploy and commission power generation projects.
    • Communication & Leadership: Strong ability to interface with customers, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and present technical solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Adaptability: Ability to operate in a fast-paced startup environment, balancing multiple projects and adapting to evolving technical challenges.
