The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geology or Geological Engineering. Candidates with a range of expertise including sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, surface processes, or other related fields are preferred. Our proximity to world-renowned geologic areas including the Black Hills and Badlands and access to the South Dakota School of Mines Museum of Geology provides opportunities for field- and collections-based education and research at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

An earned doctorate in geology, geological engineering, or a closely related discipline is required at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, develop a robust externally funded research program that will support graduate research projects spanning surface processes as they apply to geology, geological engineering, and/or paleontology, and establish a quality publication record. In addition to advising BS students in the program, candidates are expected to contribute to graduate student advising across one or more degree tracks, including MS (Geology, Geological Engineering, and Paleontology) and PhD programs. The successful candidate will begin their employment in August of 2025. Questions about this position may be directed to the search committee chair, Dr. Sarah Keenan (sarah.keenan@sdsmt.edu).
