Job Description

AtkinsRéalis is one of Canada's largest private sector nuclear engineering groups. We have been providing a wide range of services to the nuclear industry in Canada and around the world since for more than 60 years. We are proud to be the steward of Canadian CANDU nuclear technology.

You role within the team:

  • Plan and undertake all required civil and structural engineering design and licensing activities for the active projects. Activities will vary depending on project scope but will include such things as structural and geotechnical analyses, seismic qualification and assessment, site layout design, and discipline-related licensing submission tasks.
  • Prepare engineering design calculations, design documents, 3D models, and engineering packages, for general site layouts, civil earthworks, and early site design structural systems involving multiple materials, such as steel, reinforced concrete and masonry.
  • Select and apply the appropriate tools for structural analysis as required, using software programs such as ANSYS, SAP2000, STAAD Pro, and SSASI.
  • Identify and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards and regulations, and ensuring the adequacy of design for permits, licensing, and compliance with approved plans, as applicable.
  • Prepare all required licensing submissions related to the civil-structural design work performed.
  • Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed site and other structural designs, ensuring timely preparation of deliverables for each stage, such as requirements elicitation and management, development of composite 3D models with other disciplines, capturing analysis results, develop technical specifications, and contribute to project and asset information definition and capture.
  • Ensure effective and interactive working with other discipline team members, sharing data in a timely coordinated manner and preventing "siloed" working.
  • Perform site walkdowns if required by the project, for example in support of new design requirements definition, solutions ideation, or performing design modifications.
  • Provide technical instructions to supporting junior engineers and others to enable effective performance of their assigned activities.
  • Review and comment on the work performed by others to ensure suitable scope, accuracy, completeness, and quality of technical information and design documentation.
  • Check the work performed meets the quality requirements in accordance with Company QA programs and manuals, as well as the specific requirements of the customer and project scope.
  • Participate in formal engineering design and other reviews as may be mandated for the design activities.
  • Support business development in the team through delivering quality on-time work, cultivating valued contacts with customer counterparts through technical excellence, and supporting the preparation of engineering estimates and technical write-ups for proposals.

Why choose AtkinsRéalis as an employer?

Because we offer:
  • The opportunity to work on various major projects for internal and external clients.
  • An exciting environment where work-life balance is important.
  • A wide array of learning and development opportunities.
  • Competitive pay, flexible benefits, an employee share plan, and a defined contribution pension plan.
  • A work environment focused on health and safety.

The ideal candidate:
  • Civil Engineering degree from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of eight years of civil engineering design experience of industrial sites, buildings and structures in highly regulated industries. Two to three years' nuclear experience preferred.
  • Licensed by a professional engineering organization recognized in Canada is required. A licensed Professional Engineer from a Canadian provincial Professional Engineering organization (e.g., PEO) is preferred.
  • Deep and thorough understanding of civil-structural engineering design and analysis processes, techniques and tools, gained through a combination of design-office and site experience, is required. Nuclear industry site or field experience is an asset.
  • Experience designing and providing engineering support to site layouts and construction drawings for industrial sites, buildings and structures is required. Knowledge of new nuclear early site and facility design is an asset.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of Canadian and international codes and standards used in this engineering field is required.
  • Experience preparing and defending all required licensing (i.e., safety case) materials related to your discipline within the Canadian nuclear regulatory framework is preferred. Awareness of and/or experience in regulatory requirements in other countries is an asset.
  • Knowledge of, and experience working within established highly-regulated industry quality assurance requirements, procedures, and practices is required. Nuclear industry QA program working experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, as well as communicating and working effectively with external customer and regulator stakeholders.
  • Must be eligible for Security Clearance through Public Works and Government Services Canada.
  • Must be able to travel to client sites as required, according to specific project needs.
