U. S. Steel's Minnesota Ore Operations includes two iron ore mines in Northern Minnesota. The Minntac Facility in Mountain Iron has an exciting vacancy for a Utility Technician - Fire Protection.

As a Utility Technician - Fire Protection at U. S. Steel, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees and facilities. This position involves a wide range of responsibilities, from responding to emergencies to maintaining and inspecting firefighting equipment. We are looking for a dedicated individual who is passionate about safety and has the physical capability to handle demanding tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Respond to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies.
- Safely operate fire apparatus and other equipment.
- Inspect, clean, service, test, repair, maintain, and install firefighting equipment, fire control systems, and emergency medical equipment.
- Render first aid to the sick and injured.
- Demonstrate firefighting techniques and conduct inspections for fire hazards.
- Frequently lift and/or move heavy tools and equipment.
- Carry (over the shoulder) or drag victims out of buildings, and assist in lifting patients onto a stretcher.
- Perform tasks that may require sitting, climbing at tall heights, balancing, stooping, crawling, talking, hearing, tasting, and smelling.
- Remain in good physical condition and meet departmental standards concerning fitness.
- Administer the U. S. Steel Safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the assigned facility.
- Wear proper breathing apparatus as required.
- Perform tasks supporting various producing units using basic hand tools, pneumatic equipment, gauges, oxygen lances, power actuated tools, and torches.
- Handle, transport, and process products and materials.
- Work with and around materials that may be hot, heavy, sharp, and hazardous chemicals.
- Work in various areas of the plant, which may involve hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy environmental conditions.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must have completed an approved Firefighter I & II program, must be currently certified as EMT - Basic or Paramedic in Minnesota)
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Successful candidates must have the ability to demonstrate firefighting, rescue and emergency medical techniques, including the operation of firefighting equipment.
- National Registry for EMT certification
- The position requires rotating 8-hour shift work, which will include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
- The position requires overtime work as needed.
- Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines always. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and when necessary, respirator equipment.
- The position requires punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction for the success of the operations.
- Must pass a pre-employment digital assessment.
- This is a safety sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing.
- The starting rate for this position is $35.02/hr.
