Summary:

The Wastewater Mechanic Apprentice participates in a two-part training program consisting of classroom related instruction and on-the-job training (OJT). Apprenticeship related instruction classes are designed to complement OJT. The apprenticeship program is a two-year program. Successful completion of the apprenticeship program is demonstrated by completing all required coursework with at least a score of 70% or better on final test, completing 4,000 hours of OJT as documented in their log-book and passing the Virginia Wastewater Works Operator Class 4 license exam.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Apprentice Commitments
  • Satisfactory performance throughout program in both academics and on-the-job training.
  • Engaged in learning and working.
  • Punctual and regular attendance with proper conduct.
  • Pursue training with diligence at all times. Ready to learn. Ask questions.
  • Endeavor with utmost ability to attain perfection in practice of the trade.
  • Submit monthly on-the-job training records to Human Resources.
  • Models AlexRenew Values of Drive, Mutual Appreciation and Respect and Integrity and Ethics.
  • Remain employed by AlexRenew for at least twelve (12) months following completion of the program or be required to reimburse AlexRenew for related instruction.
• Perform daily work assignments, projects and tasks under the direct supervision of another Technician, Supervisor or Manager.
• Effectively communicates by asking questions, seeking answers, information sharing and listening.

• Operate an AlexRenew vehicle as required observing legal and safe defensive driving practices.
• Employs safe behaviors in all assigned tasks, actively promotes safe behaviors and health awareness at all times in the execution of daily tasks.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) equivalent required.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver's license required.
• Demonstrates a basic understanding of tools, equipment and materials, as well as basic mathematics and computer usage.
• Ability to assist in preventative maintenance and repairs to a variety of equipment.
• Possess ability to develop working knowledge of AlexRenew's information technology systems.
• Possess ability to read, write and interpret engineering data and drawings.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
• Ability to work as an effective team member.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A detailed Physical Demands Analysis is available in Human Resources and a copy will be provided to all incumbents in this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and stand for nine hours a day. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 85 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception, near and far acuity, color and field of vision. The employee would be required to constantly communicate with management and coworkers, and to listen for emergency sirens and alarms.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee performs work indoors in a climate controlled environment and outdoors, some areas of plant are hot and humid at times.
