Tax Lead – Energy Sector

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a leadership role, ensuring full tax compliance, optimising tax strategies, and engaging with tax authorities while supporting a major player in the energy sector.
Job Purpose
As the Tax Lead, you will oversee all aspects of tax compliance, providing expert guidance on tax law amendments and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. You will be the key point of contact for tax assessments, audits, and engagements with tax authorities, driving tax policy consistency across financial functions and ensuring compliance with venture-specific agreements.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Strategy
- Lead tax assessments and enquiries, developing strong technical arguments to support tax positions while managing relationships with tax authorities to mitigate risks and penalties.
- Ensure compliance with tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions and specific joint venture (JV) agreements, implementing necessary policy and procedure updates to minimise exposure.
- Oversee the transfer pricing process, ensuring accurate disclosure of related party transactions in line with applicable regulations.
- Lead the review of tax returns for JV entities, analysing financial data and developing tax optimisation strategies.
- Provide expert guidance on deferred tax treatment for complex transactions, including impairments, decommissioning, and foreign exchange impacts.
Business Advisory & VAT Management
- Advise on the tax implications of complex accounting transactions and commercial arrangements, ensuring tax considerations are integrated into business decisions.
- Oversee all aspects of VAT compliance, including preparation and filing of VAT returns, and ensure adherence to group reporting requirements.
- Lead VAT assessments and provide strategic responses to tax authority queries, fostering a culture of compliance across the organisation.
- Monitor regulatory changes, assess their impact on the business, and provide proactive recommendations to stakeholders.
Systems & Process Enhancement
- Work closely with IT teams to ensure tax considerations are incorporated into financial systems, leading User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for tax-related functionalities.
- Maintain and enhance tax policies and procedures, ensuring documentation is up to date and aligned with evolving regulations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
- Internationally recognised accounting qualification (CPA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA, etc.) – mandatory.
- Internationally recognised tax qualification – preferred.
- 10 years of experience in the oil & gas industry, including at least 3 years in a tax compliance leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of tax regulations specific to the oil & gas sector.
