Your role and responsibilities

Are you a technically skilled leader ready to take your next step in a global innovation environment? We are looking for an R&D Team Lead to join our Marine Propulsion Technology team at ABB Marine & Ports in Helsinki, Finland. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a skilled group of R&D professionals working on one of ABB's flagship technologies-Azipod® propulsion systems, a globally recognized innovation in sustainable and efficient marine propulsion. You'll play a key role in leading the team, guiding advanced technology development, and cultivating a culture of innovation. If you're motivated by developing people, leading complex R&D programs, and contributing to future maritime solutions, we'd like to hear from you. We are conducting a global search for this position and especially welcome candidates with an EU passport who may have studied or worked abroad and are open to relocating to Finland. The work model for the role is hybrid: #LI-hybrid This position is located in Helsinki, Finland. You are mainly accountable for: • Managing the development of Azipod® technology initiatives from concept to completion-ensuring high technical quality, innovation, and adherence to timelines and budgets. • Coaching, inspiring, and growing an R&D team, supporting both individual and collective development. • Collaborating in shaping technology and product roadmaps, aligning them with our long-term business and innovation goals. • Planning team resources, allocating work, and ensuring smooth execution across multiple R&D projects. • Promoting cross-functional collaboration with engineering, supply chain, product management, and external partners. • Ensuring risks related to intellectual property and R&D execution are managed effectively. • Supporting R&D project budgeting and oversee project financial performance.

Qualifications for the role

• A B.Sc. or M.Sc. in an applicable field of engineering (e.g., electrical, mechanical, or automation).
• Solid experience in R&D or technical innovation within the marine, propulsion, or heavy industries.
• Demonstrated leadership experience, especially in leading technical experts or multidisciplinary teams.
• Solid background in handling complex R&D projects requiring detailed planning, budgeting, and follow-up.
• Adept at problem-solving and collaboration, and the ability to lead with empathy and accountability.
• Willingness to relocate to Finland (relocation support available), occasional travel.
