Your Opportunity

We are looking to add a full-time senior geological engineer or engineering geologist to the Energy group in Sacramento, CA. The successful candidate will work on challenging and diverse tasks for dams, levees, hydroelectric projects, conveyance tunnels, and water resource projects for a variety of domestic and international clients. The successful candidate will be working in conjunction with other engineers on multi-discipline teams to support project activities through the application of engineering principles and techniques. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and with small and large teams to apply critical thinking skills to solve technical issues and develop project-specific solutions. The position will require travel to project sites and will provide stimulating career growth opportunities.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to all phases of programs, including the following types of projects: design, inspection and construction of dams, tunnels, caverns, foundations, slopes, and earth-retaining structures.
  • Work in conjunction with engineers, geologists, and other professionals to solve project challenges, leading design tasks and overseeing geomechanical analyses as required.
  • Assist with feasibility studies by conducting research (i.e., desktop study, field reconnaissance) to assess challenges and develop the basis of geological/geotechnical understanding of the program to support the project as it progresses.
  • Conduct geologic mapping to support various types of field programs.
  • Follow safe work practices and adhere to company guidelines for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
  • Plan and implement field investigation programs for all phases of design.
  • Conduct field inspections; observe and participate in field exploration and testing programs including the collection and evaluation of soil and rock properties and evaluation of geomechanical conditions; perform site characterizations and evaluate geotechnical hazards.
  • Conduct geologic and geomechanical mapping and data collection to support various types of field programs in order to evaluate stability and rock mass characteristics.
  • Provide field oversight for projects during investigation or construction phases by acting as the field lead, involving other supporting staff or subcontractors.
  • Assess subsurface conditions, including review and interpretation of field maps, field logs, test data, and other field documentation, evaluate field and laboratory test data and develop parameters for use in technical analyses.
  • Progressively increasing soil and rock logging experience on state and federal projects.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and implement programs with drillers, field staff, sub-consultants, construction contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct and supervise staff using programs such as Rocscience (such as DIPS, UNWEDGE, SWEDGE) , Geostudio software.
  • Develop familiarity with regulatory agency requirements, technical design standards, and industry standards and guidelines.
  • Lead the preparation of and take responsibility for technical reports including geotechnical investigation work plans, geotechnical data reports, geotechnical baseline reports, field reports, technical memoranda, computation packages, feasibility reports, and design and evaluation reports.
  • Participate in professional development and training activities.
  • Lead by example with active support of internal policies and practices, including health & safety, risk management, project management, and quality management.
  • Grow internal and external networks to further enhance Stantec's reputation and identify additional talent to join our team.
  • Mentor and train future leaders, including development of succession plans for key positions.
  • Promote collaboration and teamwork across business lines and geographies.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Working knowledge of the principles of engineering geology, geological or geotechnical engineering.
  • Willing and able to travel, both nationally and internationally, to conduct field investigation or construction quality oversight type work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Sound organizational, technical, written, and oral communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.

Education and Experience
  • 15 to 25 years' work experience in engineering geology or geological engineering. Dams or levees experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering or Engineering Geology from an accredited university; Master's degree preferred.
  • California Professional Geologist preferred, or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):
  • CA Other Areas $112,300 - CA Other Areas $168,500 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.

Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
