A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and producing a high-quality effluent.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Operating and Maintaining Equipment:

    Operators are responsible for operating and maintaining various equipment, including pumps, motors, aerators, filters, digesters, and chlorinators, ensuring they function correctly.

    Monitoring and Testing:

    They monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges to detect malfunctions and ensure efficient operation, collecting and testing water and sewage samples to assess water quality.

    Chemical Handling:

    Operators add chemicals, such as ammonia or chlorine, to disinfect and deodorize water and other liquids, following safety protocols.

    Record Keeping:

    They maintain accurate records of operational data, meter readings, and test results, documenting any issues or maintenance activities.

    Troubleshooting and Repairs:

    Operators troubleshoot equipment problems, perform minor repairs, and coordinate with maintenance personnel for more extensive repairs.

    Safety Compliance:

    Operators ensure that safety standards are met, including proper handling of chemicals and equipment, and following safety procedures.

    Compliance with Regulations:

    They ensure compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and other relevant standards.

    Training and Supervision:

    Operators may be involved in training new operators and supervising other plant workers.

    General Maintenance:

    Operators clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas.

Requirements:

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in a relevant field like chemistry, biology, engineering, microbiology, or bacteriology, or a similar discipline approved by the TCEQ Executive Director is often required.
  • Experience: You'll need a minimum of 2.5 years of "hands-on" experience in wastewater treatment.
