The Opportunity:
The Senior Systems Engineer - Aviation Software will play a critical role in the development, integration, and certification of mission planning systems for Australian Defence Force (ADF) aviation platforms. The role requires extensive experience in aerospace engineering, software development, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on delivering high-quality engineering artefacts within strict timeframes.

The Senior Systems Engineer - Aviation Software will play a critical role in the development, integration, and certification of mission planning systems for Australian Defence Force (ADF) aviation platforms. The role requires extensive experience in aerospace engineering, software development, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on delivering high-quality engineering artefacts within strict timeframes.
This role is well-suited for an experienced Defence Senior Systems Engineer who thrives in a high-security, mission-critical environment and is committed to advancing aviation mission planning capabilities.
The key responsibilities of the role, but is not limited to:
- Work collaboratively within a distributed team to develop and integrate mission planning products for Defence Aviation clients.
- Provide guidance to ensure all software development activities achieves DO-178C assurance.
- Develop and deliver engineering artefacts to support Aviation Mission Planning Software development, certification, and transition, ensuring artefacts remain up to date with tested software and achieve DO-178C assurance. This includes but is not limited to:
- Conduct risk assessments to identify and manage technical risks.
- Conduct software and system safety assessments.
- Develop system/software requirements.
- Develop and assess software certification plans.
- Ensure trace data is accurate.
- Develop and support the development of technical documentation.
- Ensure configuration control is applied to the development, transition, and support of Aviation Mission Planning Software and Software Development Tools.
- Strong analytical skills with the capability to review and improve procedures and systems through innovative engineering solutions that provide high confidence.
- Apply system engineering processes and best practices autonomously to software development activities, ensuring compliance with DO-178C, MIL-STD-498, Defence procedures and ADF regulatory frameworks.
- Work autonomously to deliver effective engineering solutions to software development that achieve MVP.
- Ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and workflows effectively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Represent the organisation professionally and adhere to company policies, security protocols, and best practices.
As the ideal candidate you will bring:
Essential:
- Degree in Engineering and/or information Technology
- Knowledge of Defence Aviation Mission Planning Systems
- Safety System/Program Experience
- Development experience using agile methods
- Network Architecture familiarity
- Software programming and integration skills
- Knowledge of Aeronautical Data & Information (DO-200 and/or DO-201)
- Experience applying engineering standards to software systems (ISO 12207 or MIL-STD-498 and DO-178, DO-278 or DO-330)
- Geospatial Data Knowledge
- NV1 Security Clearance
Desirable:
- Experience working with the ADF in an aviation software engineering capacity.
- Familiarity with European Military Aviation Regulations.
- Knowledge of Joint Mission Planning System (JMPS) and Portable Flight Planning Software (PFPS).
- Experience in System Acceptance Testing Procedure design.
