Primary Purpose:
Under general supervision, maintain, repair, and install heating and air conditioning systems and equipment throughout the district. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems in district facilities.
Education/Certification:
Must have a valid Texas Driver's License
Two (2) year technical program
HVAC and EPA approved Certification Type I & II (universal preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must have enough command of the English language to effectively make oral and/or written
presentations on activities related to his/her job responsibility.
Be able to communicate using communication technology
Must possess basic computer skills in the operation of personal computers or display terminals
Basic knowledge of building repair and maintenance procedures
Experience:
At least two years of outstanding performance while working for a reputable company
which specializes or is closely related to the job responsibilities as listed in the job description
at least one year must have been as head serviceman in charge of trouble shooting and repair
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable

Tools/Equipment Used: Electrical measuring and testing equipment; welding equipment; hand tools; power tools; hoist; light truck or van
Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; may work on rooftops; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work irregular and prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel

Technical Skills, Responsibilities and Duties

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Studies blueprints and/or work orders and estimates worker-hours and materials required to complete jobs.
- Supervises and coordinates activities of HVAC Helpers engaged in setting up, installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems.
- Enforces safety regulations.
- Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
- Maintains time and production records.
- Reads blueprints and/or other specifications to determine method of installation, work procedures, material, tools, and work aid requirements.
- Inspects all work done by the HVAC Department to insure adherence to district's standards and building codes.
- Responds to and/or follows-up emergency calls until the problem has been corrected.
- Provides leadership and training to the HVAC mechanic's helper.
- Continuously observes HVAC mechanic's helper's job performance in an effort to provide a fair and just evaluation.
- Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of material, to provide access for future maintenance, and to avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring constant with specifications and local electrical codes.
- Mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor following blueprints or specifications.
- Installs ductwork and chassis parts.
- Installs evaporator unit.
- Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape.
- Cuts and threads pipe.
- Joins tubing or pipes to HVAC units by means of sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solders joints using torch.
- Installs expansion and discharge valves.
- Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating-ventilation fans to control panels to power source.
- Installs air and water filters.
- Adds freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
- Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
- Tests joints and connections for gas leaks using gauges or soap-and-water solution.
- Wraps pipers in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or metal straps.
- Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
- Dismantles whole or part of machine, as indicated by type of malfunction and replaces such parts as switches, relays, fan motors, thermostats, and other components.
- Replaces filters, lubricates unit, and adjusts controls.
- Installs and repairs refrigerating systems: lays out reference points for installation; drills holes and installs brackets and hangers into floor or wall; lifts and aligns components into position using hoist and anchors in place; welds, and brazes parts to assemble structural and functional components, such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores, and pipes; pumps specified gas or fluid into system; starts system; observes system, reads gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanism.
- Determines need, extent and timing of water treatment program; and applies or designates someone to apply chemicals accordingly.
- May monitor and adjust equipment operation.
- Installs, services, and repairs air-conditioning units.
- Cuts and shapes fiberglass sheet to form heating and air conditioning ducts.
- Assists plumbers in installing, testing, adjusting, and repairing regulators, ranges, and heaters.
- Transports tools, parts, equipment, and appliances as needed.
- Calibrates and repairs pneumatic thermostats.
- Services refrigerators, ice makers, freezers, air conditioning units, water fountains, and heating boilers.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.
Safety
- Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
