Job Description Summary
We are seeking an Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel to be at the forefront of protecting the intellectual property (IP) that is critical to GE Aerospace's mission of inventing the future of flight. The IP Counsel will lead projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business and have high visibility to business and engineering leadership. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in various aspects of IP law and bring ambition, creativity, and accountability to implementing IP strategies across business units and engineering technology groups. The IP Counsel will report to a more senior IP Counsel or deputy who reports up to the Chief IP Counsel & General Counsel of Engineering, depending on depth of expertise and range of experience.
This is a hybrid role located in either of 4 locations: Norwalk, CT; Evendale, OH; Washington, DC, Niskayuna, NY.

The base pay range for this position is $ 145,400 - 193,800 USD Annual. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Mitigating IP risks for cutting-edge technologies through freedom-to-practice analyses, third party patent landscaping, and adversarial patent validity challenges
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating IP terms in a wide array of global transactions, including R&D agreements, technology licenses, NDAs, sale/purchase contracts, USG contracts, and M&A deals
- Investigating and pursuing enforcement of IP rights against third parties and/or defending against third party IP legal disputes through litigation or other dispute resolution activities, particularly with respect to patent and trade secret matters
- Providing strategic guidance to support GE Aerospace's IP asset development team (substantially devoted to patent preparation and prosecution) to ensure alignment with business objectives and maximize potential return on investment
- Collaborating with other IP professionals to develop and execute sophisticated IP strategies
- Establishing or improving IP-related policies and procedures, including employing lean principles to standardize work and leveraging resources efficiently
- Advising on data rights issues in US government contracts and proposals
- Supporting pursuit and enforcement of trademark and copyright protection
- Vetting and managing outside counsel engaged on IP dispute and transactional matters
- Collaborating with colleagues globally across the legal function, including commercial, contracts, sourcing, tax, and compliance in pursuit of business objectives and resolving business threats
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics from an accredited university or college
- At least 5 years of experience practicing IP law in a firm, or in a law firm combined with an in-house corporate environment
- Member in good standing to a state bar within the United States

- Strong ability to interface with, and influence, executive leaders through polished interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- High ethical and professional responsibility standards
- Deep knowledge of patent and trade secret caselaw and statutes, including ongoing developments
- Significant experience in key IP activities such as developing infringement/invalidity claim charts, researching and drafting IP memos on complex topics, and conducting investigations and interviews to support IP claims/defenses
- Substantial experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Litigating patent and trade secret matters in District Court, Federal Circuit, ITC, and PTAB, with involvement in pre-suit diligence, complaint/motion/brief drafting, discovery, pre-trial proceedings, expert reports, trial, post-trial, and appeal
- Providing advice to clients on matters of freedom-to-practice, validity/infringement opinions, portfolio diligence, and enforcement investigations
- Drafting, revising, and negotiating IP agreements/licenses/settlements to successful conclusion
- Advising on FAR/DFARS clauses relevant to IP/data rights in US government contracts
- General understanding of differences among global IP laws and systems
- Familiarity with trademark and copyright practices and procedures
- Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, with some experience and/or knowledge of patent prosecution practice
- Willingness to learn outside of a comfort zone while exhibiting problem-solving, creativity, and a sense of humor
