The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division Essential Balance of Plant Group (PFE-EBP) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a dynamic and experienced Deputy Group Leader (DGL) to lead the creation of a Shift Technical Engineering Team, a mission-critical team that will support 24/7 operations at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility.

This role is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of engineering and operations at the nation's premier plutonium facility.

As DGL, you will work closely with the PFE-EBP Group Leader to stand up a new team and create the framework for an effective Shift Technical Engineer program. You will provide technical and operational leadership to a team of shift-based engineers, ensuring the team delivers responsive, high-quality engineering support to facility operations 24/7.

In this role, you will predominately work a standard weekday, daylight shift. However, occasional shift work will be required, particularly as the new team is developed and transitioned to a 24/7 support schedule.

Roles and responsibilities include:

• Create the framework for the new Shift Technical Engineering program.
• Lead and manage the newly established Shift Technical Engineering Team, providing oversight and mentorship to a team of multidiscipline engineers who have yet to be hired.
• Coordinate shift coverage, qualification, and real-time engineering support for TA-55 facility operations.
• Ensure alignment with nuclear safety requirements, conduct of operations, and conduct of engineering.
• Collaborate closely with the engineering, operations, maintenance, and project leads.
• Oversee training, qualification, and professional development of shift engineering personnel.
• Promote a strong culture of safety, excellence, and continuous improvement in a 24/7 operations environment.
• Support the PFE-EBP Group Leader on strategic planning, workforce development, and technical capability growth within PFE.

Support the PFE-EBP Group Leader on day-day facility engineering issues.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership Skills
Demonstrated leadership experience as a team leader, supervisor, technical project manager, lead engineer, etc.

Technical Expertise
Strong understanding of DOE nuclear facility operations, safety basis, and engineering management principles.

Communication Skills
Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead in high-pressure, shift-based environments.
Demonstrated experience interacting and communicating both written and orally.
Ability to proactively work to assist others in achieving the organization's objectives.
Ability to communicate findings and make recommendations.
Demonstrated self-starter and the ability to work independently with limited management oversight

Organizational Skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Prior experience as an SRO, STE, or STA at a nuclear facility is highly desired.
• Familiarity with LANL Conduct of Operations, Engineering Standards, and Configuration Management.
• Breadth of knowledge spanning operating facilities (e.g. mechanical, electrical, I&C, structural, nuclear, etc.) and common equipment such as pumps, motors, breakers, fluid systems, etc.
• Experience building and managing shift teams or working in a 24/7 operational environment.

Education and Experience:

Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
