The Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Visiting Research Scientist. This position is responsible for performing a variety of research and development activities in relevant areas of radiological imaging.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performing a variety of research activities in the area of radiological imaging physics, including the development of gamma-ray imaging sensors and readout electronics, SPECT, PET, and X-ray imaging instrumentations, image and signal processing techniques, pre-clinical and clinical applications.
  • Develop new research areas to include external research funding from campus, state, and federal sources.
  • Collaborate with physicians in several clinical institutions on applying the medical imaging devices developed by the RDI research group on the diagnosis of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and brain disorders.
  • Supervise graduate students which includes performance management, delegation of tasks, and approving leave requests.
  • Assume additional appropriate related research duties to further the mission of NPRE.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in bioengineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering (with PhD thesis in radiological science and related areas), and/or medical physics.
  • Strong technical experiences in radiation detection and measurement techniques, electronics, image processing.
  • Experience as a postdoctoral researcher in medical physics and nuclear imaging instrumentation.
  • Proven experience collaborating with researchers in clinical institutions, including participation in joint projects, publications, or clinical studies.
  • Minimum of 1-year postdoctoral research experience in radiological imaging.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in bioengineering.
  • Experience in developing major nuclear medicine instrumentations, such as PET, SPECT, and X-ray imaging systems.
  • Working knowledge of radiation physics.
  • Experience on radiological imaging instrumentation.
  • Experience with radiation imaging sensors and electronics.
  • Solid knowledge on gamma ray imaging sensors and readout electronics.
  • Demonstrated background on developing radiological imaging instrumentations, such as SPECT, PET and X-ray imaging hardware.
  • Proven track record in independent experimental design and Monte Carlo methods.
  • Strong ability in developing image reconstruction algorithms.
  • Strong programming skills with one or more of the following programming languages, C, C++, Python, Matlab ad Labview.
  • Demonstrated communication and leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively in large research collaborations.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The position may become permanent at a later date. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $65,000-70,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy .
