The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK) is recruiting for a Power Plant Operator Sr., to join our dedicated Power Plant and Utilities team. The Home is a 24/7/365 long-term care facility that specializes in providing comfort, support, and professional healthcare services to elderly or disabled veterans and spouses of veterans. Our facility is on the picturesque shoreline of the Chain O'Lakes, off Highway 10, between Stevens Point and Appleton, Wisconsin.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Power Plant Superintendent, this position performs as a skilled Power Plant Operator for the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK). The incumbent maintains and operates high-pressure steam boilers and related equipment, including a 1 mw diesel-fueled power generator, air compressors, reverse osmosis (R.O.) units and water softeners, feed water pumps, chemical feed pumps and condensate return systems. The position operates and maintains a chilled water system and related equipment, including an 860-ton and an 890-ton Trane Cen-Tra-Vac centrifugal chiller, variable frequency drive pumps, tower pumps, chilled water circulation pumps, and chemical feed systema; monitors the operational status of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system and well computers; and prepares plant operational logs to be reviewed by the Power Plant Superintendent. The incumbent performs all tasks in compliance with Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and federal, state and agency rules and policies.

Salary Information

Starting wage is $27.09 per hour, plus additional compensation for nights, weekends, holidays and overtime.

Power Plant Operator-Senior is in pay schedule-pay range 03-15. For current or eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan effective at the time of hire.

This position is not represented by a bargaining unit.

Job Details

LTE will be filling in for vacations and covering vacancy in a 24/7 plant operation including weekends and holidays. Varying 8-hour day/afternoons/overnight shifts, occasional 12 hour day or 12 hour overnight shift is possible.

Physical requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Work is often performed in narrow, confined and occasionally poorly-ventilated, dusty, dirty spaces with hazards such as noise, temperature extremes, electricity and power equipment, as well as exposure to live or static hot steam lines and/or gas-fired equipment/systems.
  • Job duties require performing heavy work, including occasionally exerting in excess of 75 pounds of force to move, remove and/or install components/equipment and other objects.
  • Performing the job duties involves working on structures of varying heights, climbing and working on ladders and/or scaffolding, and wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Due to the nature of the position, WDVA will conduct a criminal background check prior to an offer of employment.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have experience performing general maintenance and repairs in an industrial facility.

Well-qualified applicants will also provide details about their experience:

  • Working in a 24/7 facility
  • Operating standby emergency generators, centrifugal chillers and/or high pressure steam boilers.
  • Working with air conditioning or refrigeration systems.
  • Following safety procedures.
