Make an impact in the community by joining the Stormwater Team. The Stormwater Division is responsible for managing and improving our local water resources as we work to reduce pollution, prevent flooding, and ensure clean waterways.
The Stormwater team is currently looking for a Full-time Utilities Technician at level I, II, or III (depending on qualifications/experience). Please see the Minimum Qualifications section below detailing the training/experience required.
Total Compensation Package

Utilities Technician I - $25.34 - $30.97/hour

Utilities Technician II - $29.13 - $35.61/hour
Utilities Technician III - $30.18 - $40.84/hour
Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties
Utilities Technician I duties:
  • Assists with the programs for Maintenance of Condition as related to the water distribution system, reuse distribution system and collections systems
  • Responds to main breaks, backups, and repair of utilities systems
  • Performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs on equipment.
  • Assists in major maintenance and repairs to division equipment.
  • Operates and maintain construction and maintenance equipment used in the department including as pick-up trucks, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, backhoe, jet truck, CCTV van, utility truck, snow blowers, gas analyzers, shovels, pick-ax, sledge hammers, and hand tools
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Provides back-up coverage in the operation of snowplows during inclement weather.
  • Acts as troubleshooter to resolve problems within a particular area of assignment.
  • Advises the Foreman, Manager and applicable administrators of potential problems or concerns.
In addition, the Utilities Technician II is responsible for the following duties:
  • Provides on-the-job instruction and orientation to lower-level personnel as assigned.
  • May train lower-level personnel in the operation of and preventive maintenance on equipment.

In addition, the Utilities Technician III is responsible for the following duties:
  • Assumes lead role to support the Foreman in directing the work of programs for Maintenance of Condition as related to the water distribution system, reuse distribution system and collections systems.
  • May assume responsibility for work unit activities during the absence of the Foreman.

Minimum Qualifications
Technician I:
  • No experience required
  • Within one year, must obtain a Class I Wastewater Collection Certification

Technician II:
  • At least two years of experience in any Utility Division repair and/or operations areas
  • Class I Wastewater Collection Certification required
  • Within two years, must obtain a Class II Wastewater Collection Certification

Technician III:
  • At least three years of experience in any Utility Division repair and/or operations areas - required

  • Two years backhoe experience - preferred
  • Some lead/supervisory experience - preferred
  • Class II Wastewater Collection Certification required
  • Within two years, must obtain a Class III Wastewater Collection Certification
Additional Requirements:
  • High school diploma/GED - required
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • Within 6 months of employment, must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B (must be maintained for continued employment)
  • The successful candidate must pass all pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes including interview, reference checks, criminal background checks and pre-placement DOT physical and drug screen
  • Able and willing to work on-call duty which requires working weekends on a rotating basis and working all hours during emergency repairs as needed
  • Specific experience in assigned area preferred

Working Conditions

  • Work is generally scheduled between Monday and Friday with some weekend and holiday work required.

  • Attend meetings as assigned during evening hours.
  • Required to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Physical demands are described as very heavy (exert in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly in order to move objects).
  • Required to talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend or twist from the upper body; use hands and/or feet to perform manual tasks such as digging; push or pull; reach with hands and arms; squat; stoop; crouch; and climb or balance.
  • Tasks may require sitting at a computer for several hours.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus, color vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Travel by automobile is required to reach work sites and attend meetings.
  • Requires indoor and outdoor activities to include conditions of extreme heat and cold, working in trenches or excavations, and around offensive odor.
