Indigenous Engagement and Knowledge Specialist - Alberta

Our Environmental Permitting and Management (EP&M) team has a particular need to support our infrastructure, power, and renewables projects. We are looking for an Indigenous Engagement and Knowledge Specialist who will lead engagement activities in Alberta working with our Environmental team, planners and designers. This role is for our Alberta and Prairies EP&M team, however you will support colleagues nationally as part of our wider Indigenous led Indigenous Engagement group.

Our work includes delivering projects from early engagement and relations development, through strategic development of regulatory/approvals processes, to design inputs, and compliance monitoring during construction and operations. Our team works collaboratively to gain social acceptance and manage commitments to the environmental sustainable development.

This role will be based in Calgary, AB.

Your role within the team:
  • Developing and coordinating Indigenous, stakeholder, and regulatory engagement programs; including developing communication materials, planning workshops and open houses, maintaining stakeholder databases, responding to information requests, and reporting tasks.
  • Reviewing Indigenous Knowledge (IK) studies and incorporating information from these studies into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) or related documents.
  • Supporting the assessment of project impacts on Indigenous and Treaty Rights and interests, including consideration of Indigenous use of lands, resources and cultural continuity.
  • Developing and maintaining project/task schedules, budgets for engagement, monitoring progress, work hours, overall budgets, and expenditures.
  • Supporting business development efforts, including potential client/prospect identification, proposal writing and client-facing activities.
  • Ensure consultation and engagement with Indigenous Peoples is carried out in a culturally relevant way, while observing local protocols.
  • Participating in industry events through presentations at conferences and/or through membership in industry organizations.

The ideal candidate:
  • Indigenous Knowledge, with an understanding of Indigenous worldview and relevant laws, with having a lived experience as a strong asset. We are also committed to and encourage on-the-job training, mentorship, and support for further education and professional development
  • A minimum of 10 years relevant experience working on engagement programs with First Nations and Indigenous communities, ideally from an environmental perspective.
  • Preference for a diploma or degree.
  • Experience facilitating culturally relevant workshops and open houses for Indigenous participants.
  • Understanding of provincial, federal, and/or territorial EIA processes and experience in Environmental Regulatory and Permitting is an asset.
  • Understanding of trauma informed approaches, and experience in delivering cultural awareness training for both internal and/or external audiences (e.g., clients).
  • OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, Possession) certification/knowledge is an asset.
  • Additional language skills in French and/or Indigenous language(s) are assets.
  • Willingness to travel in Alberta, the Prairies and across Canada, potentially for a week or more at a time.
  • Preference for possessing a valid Class 5/7 driver's license with a clean driving record. We may support candidates in obtaining the Class 5 licensing through mentorship, training programs, and flexible entry points.
